Three Reasons Women Prefer Female Gynecologists
by Kevin Smith AuthorMuch
of the medical field is still dominated by men. But in the field of obstetrics
and gynecology, more and more patients are beginning to search exclusively for
a female gynecologist in The Woodlands. Why are women beginning to show this
preference? There are many reasons, and all of them are vital to your quality
of care.
Level of Comfort
The
primary reason women search for a female gynecologist is that they simply feel
more comfortable allowing a woman to perform pelvic and breast exams. Any woman
who has had a pap smear and breast cancer screening will tell you that it is
not a pleasant experience. It's invasive and generally uncomfortable. But that
discomfort can be greatly reduced when you have a female doctor performing the
exams. To be completely frank, it's just easier when your doctor shares the
same body parts that they're examining.
Better Communication
This
isn't to say that men don't know how to communicate; in fact, it's quite the
opposite. When a woman has a male gynecologist, she is much less likely to open
up about symptoms and concerns relating to her reproductive systems. This is
connected to the issue of comfort mentioned above.
Failure
to reveal symptoms or discomfort can cause your doctor to miss very important
things relating to your health. So if you need to have a female gynecologist in
order to feel totally comfortable discussing your reproductive health, then by
all means, find a female doctor that can provide these services for you. Your
health very well may depend on your ability to discuss these types of things.
Deeper Understanding
Finally,
a female doctor is more likely to have a deeper understanding of the
discomforts or other symptoms that you are experiencing in regards to your
reproductive health. For decades, many of the symptoms that women experienced
in relation to their menstrual cycles were dismissed as "female
sensitivities," because doctors simply had not experienced and did not
understand the things their patients were feeling.
While
most doctors today don't hold to those beliefs, of course, it is still more
difficult for a male gynecologist to fully grasp the level of discomfort you
might be in. A female gynecologist in The Woodlands, however,
is more likely to be able to sympathize with your complaints. While she may not
have experienced the exact issues you are experiencing, odds are she has been
in similar situations with her own reproductive health, and she will better be
able to help you.
