Three Reasons Teens Should Participate in Foreign Study Programs

by Kristen White Blogger
Have you ever noticed that you can tell a child the stove is hot, but until they actually touch it, they have a hard time understanding the concept? They have to learn for themselves and not just be told the how, what, where, when and why. This is an excellent quality and most often seen in teenagers as they edge closer to adulthood and learn to develop their own opinions and points of view about the world around them.  Education is essential to the proper development of a student but there is additional benefit in giving them a hands-on experience that brings the concepts into reality.

The top high school study abroad summer programs are designed to take high-performing students who want to experience a different culture other than their own with peers and activities specifically designed to provide learning opportunities and interactions with the community. As students have studied about various countries, politics and global issues, they have the ability, through this experience, to see the world from another perspective and through the eyes of a new culture. This can challenge their current views and prompt them into deeper thinking and knowledge enhancement that cannot be achieved through just reading a textbook which provides a one-dimension opinion.

These programs span a couple weeks to the entire summer and high school study abroad scholarships are available for qualifying families to help with expenses. Multiple benefits exist in the form of lasting friendships, new experiences, becoming bi-lingual and gaining a broader world view which make the cost seem like an investment in the teen’s future. These are characteristics that universities and companies look for when reviewing applications and resumes especially in a society where global expansion and unity is on the rise and they want individuals who have this familiarity and comfort with travel and diversity.

Students who want to be competitive, understand that they need to have unique items on their documentation that set them apart from everyone else and the international study programs provide an accepted solution that checks multiple boxes. In addition to enhancing their knowledge about culture and diversity, participants also take part in different activities so they can develop and/or increase their skills through team-building events that serve a specific purpose. These can often be categorized as volunteer opportunities which gives the student another advantage on their documentation.

Preparing teens for success should not just be about giving them a great education so they can have lots of knowledge, but it requires giving them opportunities to put that information into action at home and abroad.  By engaging with an agency that specializes in study abroad programs, students will learn how to make decisions for themselves, interact with strangers, develop relationships and connections and come up with their own perspectives based on personal experience and knowledge. This way, when they enter the next phase of their life, they have the tools and resources to make good choices and take the path that leads them where they want to go in life and how to be a productive contributor to the world.
