Three Benefits of Becoming a Host Family for International Students

by Kristen White Blogger
There are many families who would love for their children to participate in an international exchange program but their unique situation does not make this possible. Instead, they can become a host family where students from other countries stay with them and bring the experience with them. Just as participants have the opportunity to learn a new language, become familiar with different customs and experience a global perspective outside of their own, so can the host families through their interaction with the student. The best part of taking on this role is seeing different students come into your home and share their traditions, thoughts and culture with your family.

The high school study abroad summer programs provide options for families that want to host on a short-term basis. Summer is a busy time of year for many families but there are also times when the kids get bored and need something to do and what better experience than having a student live with the family and participate in the activities set up by the organization. This minimizes any disruption to the school year because the program is designed only to last through the summer and can be for a couple weeks or the full two months depending on which option is selected. It is also a great way to start out as a host family so you can see how it works for your situation and whether you want to transition to being a long-term option or prefer the brief interactions with different individuals as they come through.

Host families do not have to be rich nor will they make money from the program but they will gain a rich experience of culture and satisfaction that they are contributing towards the next generation. Individuals that participate in the gap year abroad program or other options are strong leaders, they want to understand the world around them from a first-hand point of view and then establish relationships that will last into the future. Whether you are a family with no kids and have a big heart or want your children to be exposed to a variety of other cultures, taking on the role as a host family will be more rewarding for you than for the student. Agencies that specialize in this program have plenty of stories about long-term relationships, close bonds and unique experiences that took place between a student and their hosts because each was invested in making the visit a positive and interactive event.

To learn how to become a host family, go online and check out the list of agencies or talk to your local education institution and see if they have an international program set up. The process should require a detailed application and thorough vetting so families can be matched with the right student and everyone is comfortable with the situation. There is something to be said about checking out a program from one perspective before getting involved as a participant which is exactly what host families can do when they are considering sending their children (once old enough) through the process.
