Things You Tell Yourself When You’re Scared of Going Through Change
As human beings, not to change means getting stuck. It means getting stuck in the same place, people, and life. It means immobility which also means lack of progress and lack of growth. When people encounter an uncomfortable situation, even though it might be good ground for change and development, they tend to scurry away from it.
It is because we see change as something that might be potentially dangerous. There’s too much room for uncertainties. There’s a lot of the unknown. It is a big room where danger can come from any corner. And more often than not, since we’re overwhelmed by fear, we don’t get the chance to explore, change and grow.
Are you one of those people scared of change? Or are you one of those who are in denial of their fear for change? These are some of the most common phrases we tell ourselves when we’re scared of change, that keeps us from opening the room for growth.
“There’s so much that I want to change”
Yes, you want to change but you don’t know where to start. But since there’s so many things you want to change, you end up not changing (improving) anything at all. It’s the little excuse inside your head that you whisper to yourself to convince yourself that it’s okay not to change.
But in reality, it’s just that, an excuse. There have been various methods and even processes that were created to help you out. Whatever change you want to start with, and whenever you feel comfortable to start going through the process of change. Whether it be personal or professional aspect of your life that you want to change, there are personal development coaches and professional development coaches who can help you out!
“I don’t have the time to go through change”
Another good excuse to not change. You’re either too busy with work, chores, hobbies, responsibilities or life in general. But remember the popular proverb “Where there’s will, there’s a way”? Yep, that applies to everyone. So if you really want to change, you can do it. If it’s the time that’s the issue, then time management is what you need to begin your journey towards growth.
“I don’t know where to begin”
Begin where you feel comfortable to begin in.And don’t even try to compare your start with other people’s because it will always be different. Start your journey with full determination, and start it whenever, wherever, whatever, and whichever way you feel comfortable in.
“I’m alone”
It’s okay to get cold feet. Yes, there are types of change you need to do alone. But not all the time. Depending on what your goal is, you can go through it with your best friend, a family member, or even your significant other.
If it’s something bigger such as attempting to stop drinking, or changing your work ethics, you can work with a personal development coach or professional development coach. There’s always someone you can talk to so you don’t feel so alone.
“I don’t know if it’s worth it”
Change is something you do for yourself. It is altering a couple of things about you or the things you do to become better. Of course, it’s worth it. You’re worth it.
“I’m lazy”
Okay, are you lazy or are you scared? Most people have the tendency to put off something because they think it’s not fun or if they have second doubts about their own ability to accomplish something. There’s no such thing as being “too lazy to go through change” especially if you know you’re going to learn from it. Know what’s keeping you from doing it and find a way to make change something exciting for you.
As former president John F. Kennedy put it, “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” If you’re one of those folks who want to learn and grow, then it’s about time you keep yourself from saying these things and just hop on the journey towards growth.
