Things You Need to Know Before You Leave for Punta Cana

Before you can go for an immigration check as you land at Punta Cana International Airport, you will be required to pay a $10 visitor fee. So do make sure that you have cash handy. 

If you do not already have airport transfers, it can be a tricky situation to get one at the airport. You will be flooded by cab drivers, trying to sell you rides and other tours at the airport itself. If you have your transport in place, you can avoid this harrowing experience and head straight out of the airport. Booking ahead will be a good idea and can save you a lot of headache. 

In most cases, US dollars are accepted throughout the region. However, if you are planning to venture off to remote locations, it is better to check locally about the currency requirements. It is also advisable to carry small currency notes as it is harder to break a $20 or a higher denomination. 

If you are checking the weather report continuously on your phone, don't let cloud and rain updates soak your spirit wet. This is a tropical region and often gets occasional rain that also subsides soon enough. 

Even though it is a famous beach destination, it is still slightly conservative. Beach wear is largely acceptable but keep the top on, especially women. The country’s local customs do not allow beach nudity so respect the tradition and enjoy the sun with your beachwear on. 

Punta Cana is a very touristy destination and has been developed to promote tourism. This means that even though there are plenty of other offbeat sites to explore, they are all located farther than the hotel. Don't be disappointed if you don't find a secluded beach. 

Tipping is highly favored in Punta Cana, just like any other third world country. 10-20% tipping is great unless the service standards were really poor. You can show your appreciation by tipping well and ensure premium service when you visit again. 

There are many things of interest to buy in Punta Cana rather than the primitive palm tree magnets or necklaces made of sea shells. Dominican is known for its local brew mamajuana, alcoholic beverage that is made from mixing rum, wine and honey soaked in a tree bark. You can also buy Dominican coffee and rum.
