If you are planning for a road trip in Tasmania, do not be deceived by its small size on the world map. The island state is practically vast, with very few straight roads. Although there are plenty of wiggly roads, most of them are only two lanes wide. The main reasons behind this are untamable wilderness, a fluctuating economy and low population. Due to lack of finance, bulldozing monster highways amidst the rocky mountains has never been possible. However, do not let all of these be the anti-catalysts to your plans. Just make a few considerations prior to finalisation, and you will be good to go. And always book a rental campervan or car for getting the best out of your road trip.

Now let’s have a look at some interesting things that you can do while driving through different regions of Tasmania:

Hobart: Spend a day or two in the capital city and check out the Salamanca Place and the waterfront. There are many other exciting things to do in Hobart , such as taking a tour to the Cascade brewery, a ferry ride to Museum of Old & New Art (MONA) or driving to the peak of Mount Wellington. But before you start to have fun, make sure that you book a suitable accommodation in advance. There are plenty of lodging facilities, including hostels offering cheap accommodation in Hobart.

Bruny Island: If you are looking for varied gourmet delights, empty beaches and tall forests, then Bruny Island is your paradise. You can be sure about enjoying a great deal of them in this exquisite region which is only a short car-ferry away from Kettering. Besides that, there is also a firm called Bruny Island Cruises that organises tours for watching the wildlife and coastline of the island.

Bay of Fires: This is yet another popular beach located in the north-east region of Tasmania. Here, you can opt for a Bay of Fires Lodge Walk and enjoy a comprehensive 3-night guided hike along the sands. Also, do not forget to visit the Bridestowe Lavender Estate - a farm now famous for selling ‘Bobbie Bears’ or bizarre lavender-stuffed toys.

Launceston: Also known as the second city of Tasmania, this place is worth spending a couple of days in. Launceston is quite an ideal retreat for people who love to gawk on old style structures, for the city has preserved various Federation, Victorian and Art-Deco style buildings almost flawlessly. If you are not hot on old architecture, then visit the Cataract Gorge and enjoy a walk or a little bit of rock climbing.
