Things to Know Before Starting Midwifery Abroad Programs

by Angeliicaa Maarianee Teacher

If you are planning to be a student midwife, an aspirer, or already on the course, then this topic should prove to be of use to you. Here are the things to know before starting.

Midwives are those people who provide care and advice to women and their babies during pregnancy days, labor, and the post-natal period. The job is indeed challenging and demanding but equally exciting and rewarding too. Just like license-bearing professionals, midwives aren’t lesser than nurses or physicians. They have to undergo rigorous training to make sure that they prepare for this crucial role. However, you have no reason to worry about anything. As long as you have the dedication to serve, you should be able to become an excellent, trustworthy, and knowledgeable midwife. Nevertheless, there are a few things worth knowing before you start your venture.

  1. Not much sleep: Indeed, midwifery abroad programs will deprive you of the eight hours needed to sleep. You have to wake up somewhere between 5 and 6 AM and get ready for twelve-hour shifts. The sleeping pattern that you have to adapt won’t allow you to sleep beyond 8 AM even during holidays. Then again, your body will get accustomed to the routine. It means that you won’t feel tired and you will always remain functional.

  1. Black pens are your pals: Though midwifery abroad programs tend to have specific variations from depending on the location, you will probably have to use black pens. All the documentation that you will do during your placement will require you to use black-ink pens. It won’t matter whether it is an emergency or you need to prepare a quick note regarding an issue. Black pens will always be there to support you. However, you should be wary of your fellow students, especially the ones who don’t carry stationery.

  1. Comfort will win: You may be a stylish individual who always prefers to stay fashionable. This trait of yours will change as soon as you enter a midwifery course. After all, you will have to work intensely long shifts, and you won’t get the time to care how you look. That is why you should invest in comfortable clothes and shoes. You should also consider wearing loose and comfortable underwear.

  1. Forget procrastination: Almost every medical course requires you to balance placements and assignments against social life, and it isn’t different regarding midwifery training. Naturally, you should never try to avoid work as you will have a lot to do. Otherwise, you will suffer from stressful situations that will take a toll on you. So, what is the best way to avoid procrastination? Experts suggest you get a diary or a planner to use your time wisely.

  1. You will witness your inner strength: With time, you may end up developing a weird sense of humor. If you see blood spurting out, it won’t make your stomach turn. You will also expose yourself to a tumult of emotional situations. You might feel sad at times, but it is a part of your job. A medical specialist without empathy is nothing more than a businessperson. That is why if you experience emotional surges, then you will come face to face with your inner strength. You have to be strong to be able to take care of your patients.

Your knowledge keeps on growing

Midwifery is one of those professions in the world of medicine where you get to learn something new every day. It may be at the lecture hall or inside a hospital ward. You should seize every opportunity that comes your way as it will increase your knowledge. In the end, you will become an expert midwife while enhancing your personality.
