Things to consider when looking for the right therapist for you

by John Smith Learner

As mental health awareness improves, more and more people are realising that it’s not enough to simply go to therapy. Rather, a large part of therapy’s success lies in finding the right therapist.

Although there are many highly qualified psychologists, it can take time to find the one best suited to your particular needs. Therefore, when seeking the help of a psychologist in Prahran, it’s important to keep a number of factors in mind.

When starting out on your journey to find a psychologist, you may discover that getting a recommendation from friends or family can be really helpful. This is because those who know you best might be most able to match you with someone suitable. Reading patient reviews can also help you narrow down your options.

Aside from the initial search, it’s also important to determine whether the treatment style offered by a given psychologist lines up with your mental health goals. For example, a therapist might be really skilled in psychotherapy, but if your goals better align with CBT, you’d be better served seeking out a therapist versed in that field. Similarly, if you’re a very private person, you might want to avoid getting help from a therapist who’s a big proponent of group sessions. In these cases, it’s very possible that the psychologists in question are good at what they do, but that doesn’t mean they’re necessarily ‘right’ for you.

Aside from a psychologist’s skills, qualifications, and therapeutic approaches, another key consideration is how you actually feel during a session. If you find yourself struggling to feel comfortable or having difficulty connecting, you might need to keep looking.

In the same way that there’s no shame in seeking out mental professionals’ help, there’s also no shame in ‘shopping around’ to find your most suitable psychologist.
