Pothead,” “low-life,” “hobo” and “criminal” are all words used to describe an alleged drug addict. They can be heard almost daily at any location. Fortunately, the correction of drug rehab can potentially stomp out the negative phrases to label “druggies.”

It’s well known that labeling could be a completely wrong description of a person. Every clique around the globe has generalizations made about them whether positive or negative. Here is a list of eight stereotypes of drug addicts that may not be entirely true:

Job Instability

The job market can be a tough course for people to navigate. Holding down a job may not be the easiest thing to manage for those suffering from company shut-downs or have little opportunities for education.

Appearance

Leaner men with shoulder-length hair and tattoos are oftentimes labeled as drug addicts for their appearance. The same goes for anyone who appears somewhat frightening to another individual. Everyone has a different style and shouldn’t face negative repercussions for their outward appearance.

Unstable Relationships

Some addicts are labeled as people who can’t hold down a steady relationship or offer low sex drive. Maintaining relationships is not a natural process for some, especially rehab residents who have the foremost goal of taking care of themselves.

Homelessness

Not all homeless citizens are “druggies,” and respectively, not all “druggies” are homeless. Substance abuse can occur in any indoor or outdoor environment.

Location

Some areas around the block can be perceived as a little sketchy. Rehab will teach any addict to distance themselves from areas known for high drug solicitation, but a run-down neighborhood isn’t innately a magnet for illegal substances

Criminal History

Mistakes happen. That’s part of life. Another part of life is believing that change can occur in anyone, even criminals and addicts. Those with a past criminal record receive little benefit of the doubt; however, as a word of caution, exercise trust to former criminals at your own discretion.

Age

Popular age demographics receive more heat for allegedly flirting with harmful substances. High school students can be highly targeted for experimenting with drugs for the first time. Although, parents keeping an eye on young students isn’t a crime, wrongful labeling can be hurtful to adolescents.

Class Standing

Many celebrities face drug addictions that require the help of rehab. Just because movie stars and singers alike have money and fame, they’re not excluded from facing the consequences of substance abuse.
