Laminate countertops are common features in new and older homes, especially rental properties. Laminate is cheap and quick to install, without the risks associated with installing a delicate slab of granite or a heavy slab of quartz. What’s more, laminate is now able to resemble other types of countertops, thanks in part to new coloring and patterning technology.

However, these all-too-common countertops can be incredibly problematic, and may not be able to withstand everyday use, succumbing to wear and tear far before other materials, like granite or marble, would.

That being said, many homeowners assume that the countertop installation cost is too high for them to consider replacing laminate. This couldn’t be further from the truth, especially because high-quality stone countertops are a great investment. If you own laminate countertops, you should be aware of its many flaws and drawbacks, and then consider replacing them. These are just 5 of the worst flaws associated with laminate.

Low Heat Resistance

Laminate has virtually no heat resistance. In fact, laminate melts, warps, and stains due to heat so easily that a good piece of advice is too avoid putting something too hot for your hands onto the countertop. This seriously limits your cooking potential.

Stains Easily

Laminate countertops stain incredibly easily, especially if the surface is white or beige. Acidic foods like coffee and wine will leave lasting stains on the surface, whereas stone gives you the luxury of being able to wipe away the food residue without consequence.

Scratches Easily

Good luck trying to use knives around your laminate countertops. They nick and scratch extremely easily, and the flaws will be permanent. And because laminate is so thin, scratches might even reveal what’s underneath the countertop.

Little Protection

One of the main purposes of a countertop is to protect your lower cabinetry, on which the countertops are set. Wood is not resistant to food stains or heat, so your countertops are meant to absorb the damage. But because laminate is so flimsy, your woodwork under the counter is vulnerable to taking permanent damage too should you spill or drop something on the surface.

Little Appeal

Unfortunately, laminate looks as inexpensive as it is. It’s an affordable material, but it offers little to nothing when it comes to style or beauty. While the countertop installation cost in Roswell is higher for stone countertops, you’ll get your money’s worth with beautiful color, luster, and durability. Consider investing in stone for a worthwhile upgrade.
