The Steps in Building a Vinyl Pool

by Kevin Smith Author
Those companies that do pool construction in Duluth and the surrounding area can almost certainly accommodate the type of pool that you would like for your backyard. However, depending on whether you decide to go with a concrete a vinyl pool, there are some differences in how your pool will be built. As with any in-ground pool, the right-sized hole will have to be dug, but after that, the process will definitely vary. If you decide to purchase a vinyl pool, you should be aware that there are numerous styles and qualities of vinyl pool kits available but in almost all cases, installation of a vinyl pool will progress quicker than a concrete pool.

Planning

As with any pool, proper planning is essential. This begins with the process of deciding which type of pool is right for you and also determining where to locate your pool. Once you’ve decided on a contractor to install your pool, it’s common for someone to arrive at your home for a meeting to finalize the size and location of your pool as well as mark your yard for any known public utilities. If the location of a utility interferes with where you would like to locate your pool, either the utility can be relocated or you can decide on an alternate location for your pool—the latter being cheaper.

Excavation

Access to power and water is necessary during this phase when the hole for your pool is being dug. Of course, surprises can occur during this process, such as encountering buried stumps or a ledge or soil that will interfere with installation. Though you don’t have to be on site during this process, you do need to be available by phone in order to authorize any unanticipated work. During this phase, adequate access must be provided for small earth-moving equipment—such as removing any fences or gates—but this is usually covered during the initial planning meeting.

Building

Once the hole is dug, a crew arrives to build the supporting walls and level the area. The wall assembly typically consists of prefabricated wall panels, which can be prefabricated wooden or galvanized steel walls or, alternatively, poured concrete. It’s also during this phase that the pool equipment is installed according to the agreed-upon plans, after which it’s clear where the electrical sources need to be located. Plumbing for the pool is also installed during this phase.

Installation

The last phase is to install the vinyl liner, during which the pool floor is properly prepared before the liner is put in place. Preparation is important to ensure that there is a smooth surface on the pool floor, which includes filling any holes that may exist in the excavated area. Once the liner is installed, the pool is then filled with water, which depending on the size of the pool and your water pressure can take from one to two days.

Though some details may vary, most contractors who do pool construction in Duluth follow the same steps when installing a vinyl pool.
