The Social Media Grey Area – What To Know About It.

It’s very easy for most of us to stream out information about what social media is and what it’s not. I have, through the months, been studying a lot about this amazing system from a few good leaders, and how the internet has helped push it to where it is.

Now, the social media grey area has to do with the uncertainty behind the concept. To many, it might seem as some sort of high-tech-sci-fi representation on the internet, but a lot of what we are told about it is misconstrued.

What’s the real deal about it then?

Social media is not as complicated as many of the “experts” portray it, and to put it in a comprehensive way, it’s an online version of socializing. Now what makes it seem confusing to most people is the various platforms that house it. We have Facebook, twitter, Linkedin, Google+, tumblr, youtube, etc.

What makes each platform different is their mode of operation. Facebook says “We are more social because we connect people better”; twitter says “We let people share whatever they want within a 140 word count, and generate a good amount of followers”. Linkedin says “We create a more professional platform in a social environment”… youtube tells us why videos are the bedrock of today’s business.

So, how do you then differentiate which platform works and which one doesn’t?

Well, to tackle that question, there’s really no platform that doesn’t work. Here’s why I say that… many “experts” tend to misguide people into believing that a particular social network is by far better than the others in terms of monetizing the system. I consider that statement as farce; it is for the individual to find out which one he/she prefers and learn more about it.

Facebook works for me, and it’d be a great deception on my path to lure someone who is harnessing twitter for his/her business into facebook, because I feel I know all the answers. What works for me on facebook might not work for someone who prefers other platforms. What I should focus on doing is finding people who love facebook and are looking for ways to make an impact there. It’s all about choice.
