Australia needs skilled workers to fill job positions across various industries. To attract these talented workers, the government of Australia has introduced multiple visa pathways under skilled migration programs to enable newcomers and their families to live, work and/or study in Australia indefinitely. 

Following are the different types of visas capped under the skilled migration category:

Skilled Independent Subclass (189) visa:

The skilled independent subclass 189 visa is designed for overseas skilled workers who want permanently live and work in Australia. The visa pathway follows a points-tested system that requires prospective candidates to score at least 65 points in order to apply. Additionally, applicants must also submit an Expression of Interest via SkillSelect, and nominate an occupation listed on short-term, medium/long-term skilled occupation list Australia

Candidates who meet the basic eligibility criteria are then invited to apply for the program. 

Skilled Nominated Subclass (190) visa:

The Skilled Nominated Subclass 190 visa is a permanent residency visa which requires candidates to receive nomination from an Australian State or a Territory government. In order to apply, you must qualify the skilled migration points test, which is 65, and also lodge an Expression of Interest via SkillSelect.

Skilled Work Regional (provisional) Subclass (491) visa: 

The subclass 491 is a provisional visa that permits the visa holder to migrate to Australia for 5 years. Your family members can also be included in the application to stay with you in a designated regional area in Australia. To apply, the prospective applicant must be nominated by a State or Territory Government, or have sponsorship from an eligible family member.

Eligible applicants will receive an invitation to apply from the government of Australia, after which they have 60 days to submit an official application for migration.
