Footwear manufacturing industry is among the oldest of industries known to mankind. There are records of large scale footwear manufacturers in the roman empire that was busy overtaking other empires of its time as well as in other civilisations and countless where there was a substantial population in want of food footwear. In India, traditional wooden sandals were introduced by the old rishis and sadhus and since then it has come a long way.

The proper leather tanning and shoe making industry started with the advent of the British and today the shoe industry in India is no less than what's present in other nations around the world. Before the British, shoe making was largely concentrated within the artisan community and in small scale sector industries. Even now not a lot of large Indian companies are connected with the industry barring a few which caters to the local market as well as exports products beyond borders to international markets in Africa and mid-East.

According a survey made in 2004-5, was found that the Indian shoe making industry employees more than one lakh workers. Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh are threes states with more than 90% of the leather work being done there. Employees work in small to medium sized factories where about a 100 to a 1000 people work across various leather tanning and manufacturing sectors. In 2006-7 the leather Safety Shoes industry made 1289 crore rupees and the year on year growth was remarkably slow but now in the last half decade there has been a steady growth.

Indian exports 115 million pairs every year and it is gradually increasing. It must also be noted that India is the second largest producer of shoes in the world after China which is the largest maker of footwear worldwide.  However it must be noted that unlike India which is still lagging behind in terms of global exports nations like Vietnam and China are fast becoming big exporters. China is currently the largest producer and exporter of non-leather footwear worldwide.

Changes in the organizational structure and business outlook is changing in the shoe industry in India and soon the key producers in the Indian states of West Bengal and Tamil Nadu is expected to produce more shoes not just for domestic use but also for exports. It remains to be seen how the large companies which have until now been on the side-lines or completely started away from the shoe making industry takes the challenge of making international quality footwear in the days to come.
