The Scope of Lab Microscope

by Joseph Marie General
With lab microscopes used extensively in many fields today, there are many new and advanced microscopes available on the market. Such a wide choice confuses someone looking to buy a microscope that meets his or her needs. A clear understanding of the purpose of your study and knowledge of the various parts of a microscope can help you choose the right equipment that fulfills your needs.

You may be running a pathology lab that needs to analyze blood samples to identify the cause of sickness, or match the blood cells to help the law & order departments to solve criminal cases; scientist use microscope to make new inventions and discoveries in the field of life sciences, etc.  As it is evident, though all the functions or uses appear similar, the perspective of analysis differs largely, and every purpose needs a specific instrument for better and rational analysis.

Additionally, selecting the right equipment also requires knowledge of the functioning of a microscope or the important parts of a microscope and their functionality. There are two types of microscopes available, a compound microscope and a stereo microscope. If you need high magnification to be able to see the cell structure with detail you will need a compound microscope.

Lab microscope or compound microscopes are synonymous with the term microscope. These are available in both binocular as well as monocular formats, and comes with at least two lenses to facilitate observing or studying objects or samples from two dimensions.

Lab microscopes have a minimum of two lenses; an objective lens and an ocular lens or an eyepiece. These eyepieces typically have a magnification power of 1000*, however, some compound microscopes may come with a lower or a higher magnification to suit specific requirements.

The knowledge of the functioning of different components of a lab microscope is another important aspect in selecting the right equipment. A microscope typically consists of a light source, which also forms the very important part or aspect of the instrument, as it offers proper illumination required to view the object.

Just above the light source of a lab microscope is the stage, a flat platform that holds the sample under observation. Stage is above the source of light and has two clips to hold the sample firm. With the help of a stage control, a knob, you can move the sample around to view it from many different angles. Objective lens is another important component of a microscope that helps to change the magnification according to your requirements, with the degree of magnification written with a number followed by an “X” or a multiplication symbol.

Today, there are many lab microscopes available on the market with highly functional components such as strong aluminum die-cast, optical coatings, brass-gears, etc., to help you get the best view and help you analyze the specimen properly.
