The perfect hair treatment targeting your specific hair type, done regularly is the key to achieving your hair goals. Do not overdo the products or just buy it because of a ‘fad’. Fine, Thin Hair
If your goal is thickening your hair or giving it more body, you can start with volumising or thickening shampoos and conditioners. Once a week, you should also use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of impurities and build-up from daily products that you use which weigh your hair down. Apply a volumising mousse to style your hair and either allow it to dry naturally or scrunch it to create waves.
To promote hair growth, you can create an avocado treatment at home by mashing 2 ripe avocados and mixing with 1 egg yolk, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, and half a cup of honey. Massage onto the hair from roots to ends and leave on for 1 to 2 hours, until it hardens. Shampoo, rinse, and condition the hair as usual. The oils in avocado strengthen the hair and will make it thicker and fuller if done regularly. If you are adventurous enough, you can try rinsing with flat beer. To do this, you must leave a can of beer opened for a few hours and use as a final rinse after shampooing. Use beer that has been brewed traditionally as this will make hair thicker and create volume.
Hair is either oily or dry because its pH levels are not balanced. For oily hair, you can use lemons or apple cider vinegar for your final rinse. These two are great for their acidic properties that cleanse away excess oils, build-up, and impurities. Mix the juice of 3 lemons with a quart of water for the final rinse. For a vinegar rinse, mix 1 cup apple cider vinegar with 1 quart of water. For best results, do this 3 or 4 times a week.
Oily hair needs to be shampooed everyday and lightly conditioned. Use conditioners designed specifically for oily hair, avoiding silicones and other oils. Apply only to the last half part of your hair, down to the ends.
Coarse, Dry Hair
Applying too many harsh chemicals and frequent usage of blow dryers and hair irons strip the natural oils of the hair, leaving it dry and rough. Treat your hair and prevent more damage by getting a hot oil treatment formulated with jojoba oil. You can also use the jojoba oil itself, just warm it before massaging onto your scalp. Wear a shower cap and leave on for 20 minutes before shampooing and rinsing.
Tea is known for its soothing properties and also makes the hair shiny. After shampooing your hair from the hot oil treatment and rinsing with plain water, you can use a mixture of chamomile tea and the juice of half a lemon in 8 ounces water as your second rinse. For an antioxidant, antiseptic rinse, you can use drops of essential oils of peppermint, lavender, rosemary, thyme, or lemongrass mixed with a cup of warm water.
Curly Hair needs more moisture than straight hair, so it’s best to skip daily shampooing. It is advisable to do conditioning every day to give your strands enough moisture. Apply the conditioner a few inches away from the roots, down to the ends, to make sure that you don’t end up with an oily scalp. You may opt to choose a leave-in conditioner to keep your hair hydrated all day. Also, deep condition your hair at home weekly with masks or treatments designed specifically for curly hair. Avoid using blow dryers if you don’t want to sport an afro.
You can also try a natural DIY deep scalp and hair treatment by massaging organic coconut oil onto the scalp and hair for 10 to 15 minutes. Then, cover the hair with cling wrap or a shower cap and wrap with a towel. Let it sit for 10 minutes before shampooing gently.
At the end of the day, the best treatment starts from the inside. The extreme conditions of your hair could be blamed on what you feed yourself and how you practice hygiene. Avoid fatty foods and sugar that cause excessive oil production; drink your 8 glasses of water or more to keep your whole body hydrated. Give your hair time to breathe from all the styling and heating agents. Healthy hair starts with healthy choices.
