The Power of CNC Lathe Machining

Standard Bolt Size Chart

When it comes to choosing fasteners for your project, understanding the different proportions and dimensions of standard bolt sizes  are critical. Bolts are measured in either inches or millimeters and are also designated by the number of threads per inch or the metric equivalent of thread pitch, which determines how tightly a bolt will be installed in its intended application.

Metric bolts are typically labeled with the letter M and the bolt diameter in millimeters, followed by the number of threads per mm or pitch. The thread pitch is the distance between one thread and the next, and can be identified by a suffix of NP or NPT (National Pipe Taper) or UNC or UNF (United National Coarse or Fine).

The nut's nominal diameter, often called the major diameter, is defined by the maximum hole size it will fit in; for example, 1/4" hex bolts take 7/16" wrenches. In addition, all bolts are assigned a strength grade (grade 1 through 10) and an overall tolerance position.

Metric Bolt Size Chart

The dimensions and proportions of a bolt are important. They depend on the material the bolt is made from as well as what it will be used for. Aluminum, for example, is easy to machine but may not be suitable if the item will be exposed to intense stress or corrosion.

There are also different types of bolts, and each has its own characteristics. For example, a bolt's shear strength and tension strength are two different things. The shear strength is the amount of force that the bolt can withstand before it breaks under load. The tension strength is the amount of force that the bolt will apply to the item it's fastening to.

A CNC lathe is a type of machinery that uses pre-programmed computer software to dictate the movement of factory tools. It can cut a variety of materials and shapes, including plane surfaces and screw threads. It can also create three-dimensional products with extreme accuracy.

Imperial Bolt Size Chart

The imperial bolt size system uses a series of proportions to measure the major diameter of a hex bolt head. Using the correct dimensions is critical to the success of any project. Measuring incorrectly might result in improper thread length, or the bolt’s tensile strength being less than expected.

The major diameter measurement of a bolt also determines its thread pitch. The pitch dimension is abbreviated on the bolt’s specification, but if it is left off entirely then a coarse thread is assumed. The bolt’s class number is another important measurement when determining its strength, as higher classes indicate a stronger bolt.

While CNC lathe services can be expensive, they are well worth the investment when it comes to saving time and making high-precision parts. They work by reading G-code, a translated version of CAD design code to automate the process of creating complex items in quick and efficient ways. They can produce a number of different products, from large metal frames and engines to small bolts, screws, pins, and other cyclindrical components that require machining.

Thread Pitch

A thread’s helix can twist in two possible directions. Those that turn away from the viewer are known as right-handed threads, while those that move towards the viewer are called left-handed threads. The thread’s helix can also be oriented in a manner that enables it to be tightened using more torque at lower levels.

The pitch diameter (also referred to as the 'effective diameter') is the diameter of an imaginary coaxial cylinder that intersects the surface of the thread at equidistant points, namely, on the crest of an external thread or at the root of an internal one. It also slices the sharp-V form of a thread, having flanks that coincide with each other at these equidistant points.

Under ideal conditions, the PD lines of a screw and nut would touch each other and be completely hidden within their respective helixes. However, this is rarely achieved in practice, so a 'fundamental deviation' is generally provided for at the PD level.
