The One Thing That Can Get You a Bigger Piece of the Ecommerce Pie?

by Czarina R. Content Manager and SEO

How to take a bigger piece of the ecommerce pie? It’s estimated that there will be 1.92 billion global digital buyers in 2019. That is approximately 25% of the world’s population. That’s 1 out of every 4 people in the world who uses the internet to buy the product they want! The growth of ecommerce is out of this world! In 2017, ecommerce was responsible for around $2.3 trillion in sales and is expected to hit $4.5 trillion in 2021.

How do you get a slice of this pie? The one thing that I believe prevents ecommerce websites to have a bigger piece of that pie is credibility built on consistency. Basically, website owners are not known to potential customers. So, that credibility must be built first.

The world wide web is filled with thousands of new ecommerce website a day, some are so much more credible than others. Sometimes on some sites, one even wonders if the company in question is still alive.

Customers do not know you!

This is a question I ask myself regularly, why are so many ecommerce websites not convincing and converting? Why are people who are “very good” in their field do not have enough customers?

The reason I believe is because customers are not in your head, they can not know everything you know. The only way they can see what you can do is show them and the internet is there for that (it is necessary to re-transcribe your knowledge on internet).

For my part I try to always show that something is happening, it is imperative to have recent content if we want to be credible. To take a bigger piece of the ecommerce pie, you have to be credible.

Does being credible makes the difference?

Ask this question to yourself. What is the difference between a small and a big website? After all, these are only web pages, right? And yet a customers attitude and perception is totally different after the first few seconds on a site. Big websites tends to feel, look, and sounds credible than small website.

When I go to Amazon.com for example the first thing that reassures me at first glance and that shows me that the company is very active & credible is the feeling that they are dependable, delivers worldwide, 24/7 customer service, secure payment, ships to 100+ countries – they are consistent with what they say –  who won’t trust that? Check out the image below to see what I mean:

Amazon takes a big piece of the ecommerce pie because they are credible, like so.

Look at how shopify does it in their home page.

Sell online with Shopify

Trusted by over 800,000 businesses worldwide

Trusted by over 800K businesses worldwide? That right there gets anyone excited to run an ecommerce website through shopify.

Let’s get on with ebay. A pioneer of e-commerce, eBay is an online marketplace that allows people and businesses to sell directly through its online auction platform. Founded in 1995, eBay has expanded to more than 20 countries, organizing the sale of products ranging from cars and vehicles to electronics and fashion, home and garden to sports and toys, and even business and industrial products.

Ebay takes a big piece of the ecommerce pie, because they are dependable, like so.

Walmart is the world’s largest retail corporation, operating hypermarkets, department stores, and grocery stores. A leader in the United States, it is also engaged in Canada, Mexico and a number of other countries through subsidiaries. Its online shop sells a diversified range of products, from food to electronics, from fashion to pharmacy, from home equipment to auto-parts.

What do I see with these top four ecommerce website in the world today that I do not see in most ecommerce websites?

I see credibility – dependability – they cater to customers need,  delivers worldwide, 24/7 customer service, secure payment, ships to 100+ countries.

Most of these e-commerce sites that sell textiles and fashion accessories for example – most of us do not know if it’s a demonstration site or not. It’s just hard to trust a website that does not show credibility.

The ecommerce websites above are samples of consistency, they have been at it for the longest time and they built that trust with people.. Ebay was here 20 years ago, shopify is trusted by 800K plus businesses, Amazon? Need we say more. Walmart, has been here as much as I can remember, even before the internet was invented. They built what they are now! I am sure you will agree that it wasn’t like this for them when they started. That is why they take a big piece of the ecommerce pie in the world!

Let’s take for example how Amazon started:

The year was 94′ and Bezos was working diligently on Wall Street. At 30 years old, he began to see the internet revolution take place, and made the decision to quit his job and start an internet company.

“The wake up call was finding this startling statistic that web usage in the spring of 1994 was growing at 2,300 percent a year. You know, things just don’t grow that fast. It’s highly unusual, and that started me about thinking, “What kind of business plan might make sense in the context of that growth?”

After making a list of the ‘top 20’ products that he could potentially sell on the internet, he decided on books because of their low cost and universal demand. It turns out, it was just the beginning…..

How about ebay?

Everyone wants a piece of the eBay pie, and for good reason. eBay has over 162 million active users worldwide with over 800 million items for sale on the site at any given time. But it wasn’t always this way. eBay grew from one man’s idea. eBay started in 1995 as an idea for collectors to buy and sell Pez dispensers. Founder Pierre Omidyar began eBay as a favor to his girlfriend.

Before Shopify was a platform for creating online stores, it was an online store itself. That was the original vision—when the company was created, it was never intended to be a platform for e-commerce. The site didn’t even initially plan to create its own software for the e-commerce side of things. The first version of Shopify (before it was called such) was an online store that sold snowboards. When Shopify was a store selling snowboards, it was called Snowdevil. When Shopify was first an e-commerce platform, it was called Jaded Pixel.

So, everybody starts small, – well some do not start that small, but certainly do not start that BIG. They are BIG because they grew BIG. They built their empire with credibility. I am sure it wasn’t always rosy all the way. But we see the point.

Credibility does not happen over night!

You have to put in the work, the long hours creating consistent content for your ecommerce store. The countless emails in response to inquiries. Our advise is to support your e-commerce with content produced in parallel with your products through a blog or a content website. It is important to understand that customers are human too, and that, there is a human part to every thing online – a big part of that dynamic is being credible in the eyes of your customers and potential customers visiting your ecommerce website.

How do you build credibility?

Be consistent by telling the truth! Your ecommerce website should tell truthfully what it is selling and does not misled anything. In time, when you have build enough consistency, your websites become credible as well. Once you break that credibility, and you lied to your customers, I can guarantee you, you will lose customer in no time.

Dwayne Johnson said it right in this quote,

Here is the thing:

I do not know what you think, but sometimes I feel like repeating myself to get my point across. More seriously I think we all seek a solution to a problem that does not exist, because to exist on the internet (as always), you have to start by being yourself and to display your real values. Doing like everybody does, it does not make sense! I am different from you and you are totally different from me, right? But it does not lessen the fact that you and I wants to be seen as consistent – to be credible and trusted by people(customers).

In addition it must be further said that users will not come back to your website if they cannot find fresh regular-consistent content on your part. If the world wide web cannot find you with regular and useful content, you may as well stay in the shadows.

Credibility by being consistent is why we exist!

This is the precise reason why Shoptech Media do not just develop ecommerce website. We develop Prestashop and thirty bees ecommerce websites. We want to be consistent doing it. And we are good at it. We have been doing it for years, and we want to be known as the #1 Prestashop and thirty bees ecommerce developer in world! Because we want to take a big piece of the ecommerce pie.

So, in conclusions. We ask the same question, how do i get a bigger piece of the ecommerce pie? The answer is credibility built from the ground up. Your sales may not come in 2019, perhaps in 2020 or 2021? When you have built enough credibility and authoritative content because you were consistent in the niche that you have chosen, you can become the next BIG one.

As the great Kobe Bryant said in an interview,

Most NBA players can do it in 1 or 2 years on a high level. But to do it  consistently at the highest level for 5 years or 10 years! That’s in another level!
