The Motivation for a Countertop Remodel Drives Choices
The
design of a countertop remodel really comes down to owner motivation and
preference. For example, remodeling a kitchen countertop in Deltona, FL, will
have two very distinct answers regarding materials depending if the owner is
doing it to increase home value or because they want a new look. Countertop
workspace will largely be driven by cost, versus the need for a large work
area. Here are some other things to consider.
Hiding Appliances
It
became popular in the 1990’s to “hide” small appliances behind closet doors,
but that trend ate up a ton of counter space. Now, most homeowners want their
appliances in the open or at most, hidden in pull-out drawers.
Customized Sinks
These
became popular around 2010. The most popular was probably the “farmhouse sink.”
Fitting them to a countertop, though, was problematic, especially if the
countertop material was granite. It added a lot of cost to the average
countertop makeover.
Backsplash
Ceramic,
porcelain or glass tile backsplashes are popular and serve a very practical
purpose. The 4-inch backsplash, however, is problematic from a practicality
standpoint. A better option is to have a backsplash that reaches from the
countertop to the bottom of any upper cabinets.
Colored Appliances
Most
appliance colors are white, beige or a variation of both. Stainless steel,
however, is still the preferred option for at least the facing side of most
appliances. It is timeless, goes with any color flooring or countertops and is
easy to maintain. Years from now, a painted appliance will look dated and
probably show a lot of wear and tear. A stainless steel appliance will still look
crisp, clean and they hide dents fairly easily.
Workspace
How
much workspace is included depends on how much the owner is willing to put into
the project. If the motivation for the remodel is because someone wants a new
kitchen, the spacing will likely be different than if the motivation is based
on controlling costs.
Larger Countertop Appliances
It is
still popular to have a special space designed for a microwave or other larger
appliance, but in many cases, overall kitchen cabinet space will not allow it.
One option is to put larger appliances in a specialized drawer that is pulled
out when the appliance is needed and closed when it is not. If costs are the
driving force, larger appliances can always rest on the countertop, although
that takes up a lot of space.
The
“why” of a countertop remodel (or any remodel, really) will drive the design
choices a homeowner makes. By figuring that out design choices become available
or off the table. If you are remodeling a kitchen countertop in Deltona FL figure
out why you are doing it and go from there.
