People who love traveling and people who have the interest to visit the vintage and ancient places, never miss out on any forts, beaches and ancient structures that resemble many things of the history of a place. One such place that a tourist can’t just miss out on, in South India, is the Bakel fort, Kerala. It is situated in the North Kerala and is approximately 67 km off Mangalore.

When it comes to the magnificent and majestic structure of this one fort of Kerala, it’d take almost days for a tourist to go through the entire fort, reach out to each of the corner and then come back to from where he started. The fort covers an area of about 40 acres that makes it the largest fort ever built in Kerala.

  1. All about the history of the fort-

Dating back to around 1650 C.E, during the reign of Shivappa Nayaka, Bakel fort was constructed during the Perumal age. The fort wasn’t just a normal and traditional fort at that time; it also served as the port town of Malabar and Tulunadu. The interesting fact resides here that the port town gained a lot of importance after the reign of Chirakkal royal family, in the Kolathiris reigns.

Kerala is known as the ‘land of god’, and truly so, many people visit the state because of the serene sceneries, calm beaches and natural views. The Bakel fort too gained importance as a major tourist spot within years. It was in the year 1992 that the government of India declared this fort as a special tourist spot. There were many reasons for this declaration, but the main one always remains that this fort dates back to centuries ago, has a lot of historical importance and is by far the largest fort ever built.

The promotional efforts by the Tourism of Kerala were to feature the fort in many films that included Bollywood and Tollywood grounds as well. The fort is seen in a number of films that made people go in awe of the structure, so magnificent and royal!

Not just an ordinary fort that were built in the ancient times, Bakel fort is also considered as the structure with one of the beautiful water tanks in it and a staircase running down to it. The flight of stairs is a main attraction spot of this place.
