The Law on Road Legal Quad Bikes

by Alex U. Digital Marketing

While there are no legal restrictions on riding Quad Bike Dubai on private land and there is no absolute ban on riding them - or any vehicle - on public land such as parks and commons, the laws that apply to riding quad bikes on the open road are somewhat more restrictive. It is complicated.

The law is divided into two main parts: that which applies to riders and that which applies to the bike itself.

Regarding riders, it is somewhat ironic that despite the quad bike making its debut as an innovative motorcycle adaptation by Honda in the late 1960s, UK law today classifies a quad bike as a motorcycle. No, but sees it as a light vehicle.

It is therefore important that those intending to go quad-riding on the road not only have a motorcycle license but also a standard car driving license which of course requires passing a driving test.

Holders of such a license must be at least 17 years of age, unless they have received an advanced Disability Living Allowance Mobility Award, in which case the minimum age is reduced to 16 years of Quad Biking Safari in Dubai.

Interestingly, although protective clothing and motorcycle helmets are strongly recommended to avoid possible injury, there is no legal requirement to do so at the time of writing.

As for the quads themselves, the law recognizes two categories: Category 1.6e and Category 1.7e.

Category 1.6e - 'Light' - They must have a maximum unladen weight of 350 kg. A maximum of 50cc or 4 kW engine; And the maximum speed is 45 kmph.

Category 1.7e quads, on the other hand, require a maximum unladen weight of 550 kg (or 440 kg if the quad is not designed to carry luggage). and a maximum net engine power of 15 kW.

To be driven on a public road, all quad bikes must meet official European Complete Vehicle Type Approval (ECWVTA) environmental and safety standards. An ECWVTA certificate is usually already obtained by the motorcycle manufacturer and presented to the owner upon purchase. If not, a certificate can be applied for. Inquiries should be made first with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

Once they have been type approved, all quad bikes taken out on the public highway must, like any other vehicle on the road, be registered with the DVLA; be adequately insured; And of course the road fund will be covered by the license (in other words, the levy).

The 1988 Road Traffic Act also states that all quads on the road, like any other vehicle, must be fitted with front and rear registration number plates; lighting and directional signage; Legally recommended tires; a speedometer; and awarning horn.

Any quad over three years old must also be tested regularly to obtain an officially valid MOT certificate. However unlike other vehicles, quads are not required to undergo emissions tests.

This is only a brief summary of UK law on road legal quad bikes at the time of writing but check the current law before riding on public roads. Whatever you do, enjoy your quad bike and take all precautions to stay safe.
