In India, there are so many different types of bridal looks and their wedding attires. But a Kerala bride at a Christian wedding wears the most unique and elegant combination of a saree and a veil. The saree is usually white, off-white, or cream in color with a beautiful golden border. Most of them prefer silk fabric for their sarees. Kerala weddings with Christian Twist!

Kerala wedding rituals are a bit different from North Indian Christians. Following are the major pre-wedding and wedding rituals of Kerala Christian matrimony-

Ancharakalyanam: This is the traditional and first ceremony to mark the beginning of the wedding rituals. In this ceremony, both the families meet each other to decide the wedding date and exchange sweets.

Haldi ceremony: The Christian community in Kerala also follows the Haldi ceremony. Families of brides and grooms apply turmeric and sandalwood paste on both of them.

Sthuthi Cholluka and Guru Dakshana: On the day of the wedding, these two traditional rituals are performed at the bride's and groom’s respective residences. Sthuthi cholluka is a prayer session that is considered auspicious and guru Dakshina is a ritual where both bride and groom seek blessings from their elders.

Wedding ceremony: The wedding ceremony of Kerala Christians takes place at the church. The best man of the groom welcomes the bride with a bouquet of beautiful flowers. Then the bride and groom walk down and enters the church together as a couple. The priest then reads the Holy Bible which is followed by a sermon and calls Homily on the sacredness of the wedding. The bride and the groom agree to be the man and the wife and make promises to be with each other.

Minnukettu: During this ceremony, the groom ties a Minnu or thali or mangalsutra around the neck of the bride. Thali is a leaf-shaped gold pendant with a cross embossed on it, connected with either a gold chain or necklace.

Manthrakodi: In this ceremony, the priest blesses and gifts the manthrakodi, a saree to the groom who then places it on the bride’s head as a blessing.
