The Himalaya is a mystical land of swooping valleys, towering mountains, and lush jungles. It is a land far more diverse than most travelers imagine. You can encounter tigers and rhinos in the jungles of the Terai region of Nepal, or snow leopards in the frosty highlands of Tibet and Bhutan. These are places of startling contrast. You may find yourself in a modern hotel in cosmopolitan Kathmandu or in a yak-hide tent beside a mountain trail.

Reverent monks, little different from their predecessors of centuries past, mingle with karaoke swingers in Tibet, henna-haired hippies in Nepal, and video-obsessed teens in Bhutan. What may at first glance seem to be a land and culture the West has left behind is full of jarring reminders that the 21st century is encroaching. All three countries are struggling to incorporate the new with the tried and true, all the while coping with invading Western influences. Also Visit - Bhutan Tour Packages from Delhi

The Terai

The southern portion of Nepal is a sun belt of tall grasses and abundant wildlife. Big-game hunters have been lured here for decades, enticed by adventure and trophies. These days, you can hunt with your camera for scenes of rhinos and other wildlife that you might have thought were only found in Africa. Like central Nepal, this southern region is as full of man-made treasures as it is of nature's gifts. Lumbini and Janakpur have shrines and temples dedicated to major figures from Buddhism and Hinduism.

The Himal

The mountains that have inspired, crushed, awed, and subdued mountaineers from around the world are perhaps Nepal's greatest asset. Home to eight of the world's ten highest peaks, the Himal dominate Nepal. They fill the rivers with life-supplying water, yet crush villages with p the landslides that often follow storms. When clouds shroud the peaks, locals seem to slump into a depression, as if a faithful friend has gone away. When the weather is clear, visitors who curse at alarm clocks at home are up before dawn, awaiting sun first beams to give them glimpse of the stone giants.

Bhutan

Bhutan is located on the slopes of the eastern Himalayas, east of Nepal and west of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. To the north lies the Tibetan region of China and in the south, the Indian territories of Assam and West Bengal.

A small land-locked country surrounded by high Himalayan mountain ranges, Bhutan is sparsely populated with just over 600,000 people. Bhutan is often compared to Switzerland because of its size, isolation, and stunning scenery. Approximately 90% of the population is hill farmers who live in small villages spread over rugged mountain country and subtropical terrain. The nation contains many ethnic groups and nomadic hill tribes who have very little contact with Western civilization and trade only in bartered goods.

Bhutan is the only surviving Buddhist kingdom of the Himalayan region. Dzongs dot the countryside and the people's deep faith permeates all aspects of secular life. The Bhutanese have long lived in harmony with nature and the kingdom's environment remains pristine. The scenery is spectacular, with jungles and rugged hills, rhododendron forests and long sweeping valleys.
