The Great Robert Smalls
I see the nigra Smalls has been arrested down in Beaufort and is charged with accepting a bribe as a state Senator. You never can tell about people. I wouldn't really have expected it. I disagree with his politics, but based on the way he handled himself at the rally in Edgefield and on the train ride back to Columbia, I took him as a more solid man.
My daddy told me all politicians were crooks. Maybe he was right.
I'm no fool. If Robert Smalls is a crook, then is General Wade Hampton a crook? You don't want to think it, but what is a General except a politician? Of course, if you're following that line of reasoning, what about Robert E. Lee? Or General Washington? You don't really want to go there, do you?
But you've got General Grant, who turned out to be a real embarrassment of a crook once he got into politics.
It's a messy business. Best to stay out of it, I suppose. I wonder what will come of this man Smalls.
