The golden rules on how to clean polyester fiber

by TM Maria Be a king in your own kingdom

Polyester fiber is a synthetic fabric that can mimic the appearance of other more expensive materials, such as suede or silk. It is usually easy to clean, but it will be vital to understand that a single cleaning method will not work for all objects in this material. Each cloth will require different cleaning methods. In most cases, furniture upholstery, mattress protectors, pillows, blankets or clothing will have to be cleaned. Below we’ll write how to clean polyester fiber step by step. Keep reading!

Clean polyester upholstery

Read the washing instructions on the label. Most furniture labels will have codes in the washing instructions. "W" means you only have to use solutions made with water. "S" indicates that the fiber can only withstand solutions made with solvent. “SW” means that you can use solutions made with solvent or water. However, if you see an "X", you only have to vacuum the material.

Fill a sprayer with water or alcohol. If the label has an "S" or "SW", you can fill it with isopropyl alcohol or vodka. Otherwise, you should only use water. Do not use soap, as it may leave a stain on the fabric.

Remove stains. Spray the stained area and let the water or alcohol stand for approximately 30 seconds. Then you will have to absorb the stain and rub it carefully using a clean cloth. To do this, you must move it in the direction of the grain of the fabric. You can use any cloth made of absorbent material.

Clean a mattress protector made of polyester

Read the washing instructions. You should follow them to the letter to avoid damaging the mattress protector. Pay attention to the recommended cycle (normal or soft) and what fabrics you can wash along with it. For example, if it is white and the label indicates to wash with items of "similar colors", you should not machine wash them with others that are dark colors or dyed materials.

Clean the spots beforehand. Spray the product on any stain you find. Commercial pre-sale cleaning products are usually safe, and you should only avoid them if the label says so.

Wash the protector with cold water. Always use cold water as the default setting, even if the label does not indicate the temperature or allows the use of hot water. Cold water will prevent shrinkage and reduce wear over time. You can use all kinds of laundry detergent, but you should not use bleach, as it can damage the material.

Dry the protector in air, instead of using a dryer. Hang it on a clothesline or place it on a clean flat surface outdoors. Leave it under direct sunlight to get it to dry as quickly as possible. If there is bad weather, you will have to dry the mattress in a folding drainer or a clothes hanger, in the warmest area of your home. It must be dry on both sides before you put it back on the bed.

Clean polyester pillows and blankets

Read the washing instructions. Identify the phrases "Dry clean only" or "Machine wash". Most labels will recommend the use of cold water and a delicate cycle for machine-washed fabrics. To obtain the best results, you should clean the fabrics that only need to be dry cleaned.

Buy mesh bags for materials that only dry clean. Use this step if you don't have the money or time to go to a dry cleaner. Clothes bags will protect delicate fabrics from agitation generated during the wash cycle. You can buy them in most supermarkets. Use separate bags for pillows and blanket. Seal each bag before placing them in the washing machine.

Use the cold water setting. Place the materials in the washing machine and program it in a cycle of delicate clothes. Do not use detergent, unless the washing instructions suggest. Add approximately a fabric softener cap.

Shake and hit the pillow. The pillows contain fabric padding, so it will be vital that you take additional measures to remove excess water once the spin cycle ends. Otherwise, you will run the risk of mold. If you shake it and hit it, this will also release any area of the filling that has agglomerated during the wash cycle. Do it until you feel no agglomeration inside the pillow.

Air dry in a warm area. Hang the pillow and the blanket on a clothesline under direct sunlight, on a hot day. If it rains or is cold, you should dry the materials near a heat source, such as a heating duct. Do not place them directly on objects such as room heaters or radiators, as this will pose a fire hazard.

Clean polyester clothes

Read the washing instructions. If you see the words "Machine wash" on the label, you can put the clothes in the washing machine without protection. Pay attention to the water temperature and the type of cycle you should use. Most labels will indicate whether the garment should be washed in a gentle or delicate cycle. Others will have the words "Hand wash" or "Dry clean only". You must adhere to these instructions for the best results.

Use a protective bag for "dry cleaning" clothes. If you don't have the time or money to go to a dry cleaner, you can use a sealable mesh bag for clothes in the washing machine. If you don't have one, you can use a pillowcase. Turn the clothes over before placing them in the bag. When using a pillowcase, you will have to seal it with a pin or a hair tie. Just place one garment in each bag, so the water and detergent can circulate properly.

Wash most fabrics by machine and with cold water. Thicker fabrics may withstand this method. Program the washer in a delicate or gentle cycle, and let it continue until the rinse and spin cycle.

Hand wash very delicate fabrics. For this step, you will have to fill a sink with cold water and a mild detergent. Then you should soak the clothes completely in soap water. Hold the opposite ends of the garment with each hand and rub them to release the residue. Let it soak for a few minutes.

Dry the garment in the air. Even if you don't have to worry about the garment shrinking, the heat of the dryer could damage the fabric. If there is good weather, you can hang your clothes on an outdoor clothesline and let it dry in the sun. If you hang your clothes on a hot summer day, it could dry in just three hours.
