The Best Way to Store Your Winter Bedding

by Halcyon Dreams Australian Wool Quilts Online

There is nothing better than getting into a warm cosy bed on a cold winter’s night. However, when the weather starts to turn and gets warmer, most of us are grateful for the change in temperature and the warmth of the days to come.

You might start to feel that your winter bedding is a little heavy and it is time to switch to a lighter quilt.  But what do you do with your winter bedding? How do you store it while it is not in use?

Wash before storing

Before your thoughts become consumed with thoughts of endless summer days, give your wool quilt a wash to freshen it up before storing. If you have a machine with a drum that is large enough to fit your quilt in, you can do this at home.

Wash it on a cool wool cycle to protect the wool and use non-biological washing powder or liquid. However, make sure you always check the label on your individual quilt.

Make sure your quilt is aired and dried thoroughly

There is nothing worse than storing something that was not quite properly dry. When you come to get it out again, there is always a funny smell that lingers. In order to avoid this, make sure your wool quilts are thoroughly aired and dried.

If the weather is kind enough, this is best done outside where it can line dry in the fresh air. If not, hanging it over your bannisters or somewhere else that is big enough will also work. Aim for it to be flat when it is drying.

How to store

The best place to store your woollen quilt is in a bag that is made of natural fibre, such as a cotton bag.  Natural fibre will allow your quilt to breathe while it is being stored and avoid it from collecting any unpleasant musty smells that might cling to it when it is not in use. Avoid using plastic boxes for this very reason as they will not allow your quilt to breathe properly.

You can always wrap your quilt in a cotton sheet if you do not have a bag that is suitable.

Finally, make sure you store your woollen quilt somewhere that is cool and dry. Follow the steps above, and you can look forward to using your quilt again when the weather gets cooler.

At Halcyon Dreams, we sell a range of woollen quilts that are perfect for all seasons, so if you are finding that your winter woollen quilt is getting a little heavy for this time of year, we have lighter quilts that will suit you the needs of you and your family.
