The best self build structural systems

by Shawn William Creative Writer

There are several structural systems available for self-build managers. A quick guide can help you choose which one you would prefer.

Bricks and blocks

This structural system has been used by builders for centuries, and they have been offering robust, long-lasting buildings since forever. It produces a durable, effective, and adaptable form of structure. All contractors are accustomed to bricks and blocks.

They are readily available. Bricks and blocks cover lots of layout versatility, too. They are dense and provide good insulation.

Timber frame

Timber frames can be an open or closed panel. Both the types comprise of wood stud work, enclosed within sheets of plywood or OSB (oriented strand board). Packing is injected into the cavity between the studs. Apertures for windows, doors and rooves are cut out in advance in the factory.

The timber structure is an incredible option if you are keen to build a thermally-efficient house since the insulating layer can be injected under factory-controlled circumstances. It guarantees better coverage.

Oak frame

Oak frames provide a novel and characterful architecture that can be both traditional and contemporary. Oak is a renewable resource. It is robust and will last for a hundred years. The warm golden tone and distinctive splits that grow in the exposed wood can produce outstanding detailing, both inside and outside your house.

Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF)

It is the most popular material for a self-build project manager. Hollow expanded polystyrene (EPS) pieces attach together without the need of any adhesive or mortar and reinforced with steel rods. Between two layers of EPS blocks, are sandwiched a cavity filled with concrete.

ICF is lightweight so they are easy to work with without requiring extensive labour or high power machinery. The building process also generates less waste.

Structural Insulated Panels (SIPS)

SIPs are built from two wooden sheets (often OSB) that are pasted together, sandwiching a sheet of strong insulation. In spite of being a thin wall, SIPs provide good insulation. The precision of the installation process also enables Self Build Project Managers to accomplish high standards of thermal support and airtightness.
