The Benefits of a Walk-In Shower

by Kevin Smith Author

As people age, they don’t want to have to leave their own home. In fact, that independence is something that most elderly people crave. But to keep it, sometimes homes require modifications for the elderly to be able to remain in them safe and securely. Things like additional handrails, step stools or changing the way that things are organized in cabinets are simple ways to increase the safety and security of a home so that it’s elderly resident can stay in it with ease.

But there are sometimes larger modifications that need to be made to ensure the safety of a home’s occupants.

If you are an elderly person who is experiencing balance issues, the simple act of getting in the shower every day can be exhausting and terrifying. For many people, that giant step over the lip of a tub can be a difficult task requiring them to find something to balance on both outside the tub before they step in, and inside the tub after they step in. You can see why this could be a dangerous situation where they are at risk for slips and falls.

Walk-In Showers

One way to combat that risk is by installing a walk-in shower. A walk-in shower eliminates the need to make that big step, find an object to balance on and hope for the best as you step over, because it has a door that makes entry into the shower so much simpler. This simple entry allows you to walk right into the shower without having to find something to balance on, and makes your entire experience that much more enjoyable knowing you don’t have to worry about how you’ll get in or out of the shower.

The Cost of a Walk-In Shower

While some people may consider the walk-in shower cost of installation to be too high, or find it unnecessary because they can find ways to get in their current shower, the fact is there is no price that you can put on someone maintaining their independence and freedom. Staying in one’s own home as they age is so vitally important to many people that the cost of installation is beyond worth it. Not only does it ensure their safety, but it ensures their caregivers peace of mind, because the fact of the matter is, you just can’t be there for them all the time. That fact alone makes the walk-in shower cost worth it.
