The Beauty and Timelessness of Handcrafted Jewelry

by Gregory Joshua Fashion jewellery, Costume jewelry

In a world of mass production, it is often difficult to pick that one item that you would consider unique or special. The reason is simple – goods are simply being moved from a production line, packed in cartons and delivered to the supermarket. With the producing machine tuned to precision, each item is a replica of the next.

Yet everybody desires something unique. When you are shopping for something to give a beloved one (think birthday present, Mother’s Day surprise or something for your anniversary), it can be quite troublesome deciding what to buy. A mass produced item will be appreciated, but should the recipient find out that you got them a one-of-a-kind gift, it is likely to be cherished forever.

That is where handmade jewelry comes in. When you choose handmade, you know without a doubt that there is no other item like it throughout the world. It does not matter how skilled the creator of the jewelry is – much as the artisan might try to create identical products, the truth is that the human hand can never acquire the precision of a machine and, despite the similarities you might notice in the work of an artist, there is always something different between two products.

On top of being unique, jewelry that is made by hand represents the creativity of the artist concerned. Each single piece tells a story. In other words, what you are holding in your hand has some history and a life of its own – quite unlike the mass produced product.

When you choose artisan jewelry, you are choosing a timeless product. It is totally unlike the products which are in vogue for a day, a month, a season or a year. It is unlike the products which people crave for, wear once and then dispose of or immediately forget they even ever had them. The product that is crafted by the hands of a gifted artist will never get out of fashion. That is why the world’s most famous works of art are centuries-old, but are still admired and provide inspiration to the modern artist.

Today’s advanced technology guarantees that almost anything can be mass produced. Yet, even in our technologically advanced world, people still crave and dare to be different. Perhaps no other avenue offers a harmless way to be different than the world of jewelry. Today, mass produced jewelry (like other mass produced products) is considered cheap. Even for people who are not out to make fashion statements, a handmade product is still desirable.
