The Basics of TMJ Syndrome

by Kevin Smith Author

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, which is what hinges your jaw to your skull. It's located just in front of your ears. If you feel pain around that area, it may be TMJ syndrome. Here are some things you need to know about it:

Signs and Symptoms

An aching in one or both sides of your jaw may be considered as a sign of TMJ syndrome. You may experience this when you chew or open your mouth wide, and it can range from mild discomfort to excruciating pain. If you're experiencing the latter, it's best to schedule an appointment with one of the orthopedic surgeons in Suffolk County, NY immediately.

You may also notice a popping sound when you try to move your mandible even if you're not eating any crunchy food. The clicking noise may sometimes be loud enough for someone beside you to hear. This problem can be caused by a disorder in your jawbone, an indicator of TMJ syndrome.

Bruxism is another symptom you should watch out for. Also known as teeth grinding at night, it may be caused by your muscles experiencing a lot of stress because of your awkward sleeping position. Use a comfortable pillow if you have this nocturnal habit.

Causes

TMJ is among the most complex structures in your body. A set of facial muscles allows it to move up, down, frontward, backward, left, and right. Aside from that, a soft cartilage disk is also located in the area to absorb pressure. A strong outside force, however, can cause that disk to slip out of place.

Improper posture can also be a culprit. So stop holding your phone between your shoulder and cheek when calling someone. It's a risk factor in developing this disorder. Aside from that, muscle trauma due to excessive gum chewing, arthritis, and wisdom tooth impaction can also be causes.

Dealing with the Pain

Place a cold pack around the area if you're feeling a sharp sting around it. The cold will numb the nerves that send the pain to the brain. Taking an Ibuprofen tablet will also be of great help.

After that, give a gentle massage from the neck to your ears to ease any discomfort. Place your index and middle finger on the area and rub it in a circular motion while also applying pressure. Do this until you feel your muscles relaxing a bit.

But apart from temporary relief, you may want to consult specialists, like orthodontists or even orthopedic surgeons in Suffolk County, NY. They’ll assess your medical history and dental records so they can recommend different treatment methods and proper medications to get rid of the pain permanently.
