The Art of Infusing Trust in Your Relationship with Your Child

by Saurabh Gupta Digital Markter

Being truthful, reliable, and trustworthy are the key traits every parent would want their child to develop as they grow up. It is truly said that parenting plays a significant role in shaping a child’s positive belief and personality. In that sense, trust is one of the fundamental building blocks that bridges as well as strengthen your relationship with your child. Trust is the root of the parent-child relationship, and without it, you cannot influence them or foster their development of positive core beliefs. It is hence important for the parents to start the process of trust-building with their children right when the kids are small. Here we, at Schools in Noida, have brought forth for you a few strategies that parents can use to build a trusting relationship with their children.

Let them know that you love them

Love is one of the most important ways to build trust in any relationship. Let your child know that you love him/her the most. When they communicate with you, listen to them with love, compassion, and without any kind of judgmental attitude. When your kid complains, talk to him/her openly and seek for his/her opinion on why the little one is feeling so.

Communicate openly

Open-ended questions with your child can help you and your child bond together. Rather than assuming your child’s actions, talkopenly and try to understand the kid from his/her perspective. When your child grows up, misunderstandings are quite common, and open talk is the best way to deal with it. Trust is always a two-way street. As a family, you need to sit together and discuss with your child, negotiating the rules and boundaries they need to follow through.

Be honest

Honesty is one of the vital elements that helps to establish trust in any relationship. Be honest with yourself as well as your child. When you are angry on him/her or are sad about your child’sactions, tell /her why you are so. When you have disappointed your child or made a mistake, be open and ask sorry. This way, your child willlearn to be truthful and will trust you for sharing his/her feelings. It is common among children to lie and sneak or hurt other kids. As parents, you need to reassure them that you trust them with their words and love them no matter what, but lying disappoints you. Such an approachwill not only help to build trust in your relationship but will also aid your child in attaining the skills of emotional regulation and impulse control.

Avoid hard-to-keep promises

Never make promises that you cannot keep. Children often trust their parent’s words blindly. So never ever disappoint them by making false promises. Always promise them what is within your ability to do and follow through it. When you are reliable in your actions and words, your child will start trusting you beyond words.

Give positive reinforcement

Always mend your child with positive reinforcement. When they admit their mistakes, appreciate their honesty, and when they don’t, teach them how and why they need to admit. It is common for parents to spank and punish their kids with time-outs or withdrawal of love for their tantrums. This can actually send a message that they cannot trust their parents with their true feelings. When the child makes a mistake or throws tantrums, stay calm and offer empathy and support so that he/she will feel heard and that will build in him/her a lot of trust for you.

Trust is an important block that builds and strengthens the parent-child relationship. If parents adopt the art of infusing trust in their relationship with their wards, it enables the transformation of children into individuals with strong character and integrity. At K.R. Mangalam School, recognized as the Top 10 schools in Noida, we believe that when children develop trust in their relationship with the parents and teachers, they move better on the path of their holistic growth. It helps to infuse individuality and discipline among children and empowers them with a mix of knowledge and skills that also escalates their learning potential in a positive way. Children, then, turn out to be more confident, independent and outperforming in all aspects of curricular and extra-curricular excellence.
