What are web directories or link directories?

Web directories, also known as link directories, are websites that list useful pages and sites of interest to the Internet, usually organized by categories.

Effectiveness of web directories today

In the beginning the directories were very effective to generate traffic, because for a large number of users, a directory was their starting point for exploring the internet. Even many people had a specific web directory configured in their browser as their home page.
