If you are an alcoholic, then this is definitely not for you but if you are one of those persons who not only drink but also love to appreciate every drop of it, you are at the right place.

Alcoholic beverages are appreciated worldwide due to their wide variety of tastes and uniqueness. When you are picking up a bottle of 16-year-old single malt, at a weekend getaway destination, you are not only picking up a bottle but also choosing a legacy, so, please make sure you taste it properly. Yes! You heard it right. You should follow the grammar if you want to get the best out of it.

Steps towards a ‘perfect’ appreciation:
Appreciation does not have any so called ‘rule’; but generally, from the perspective of a connoisseur, it consists of three steps –

1.See it
2.Smell it
3.Sip it

1.Alcohol has its own history, legacy and obviously the regional characteristics of the distillery it has been manufactured from. It is your caliber to discover the underlying essence of your poison.Pour a little into the glass, swirl it, watch the ‘legs’ of your drink minutely. What is it saying? The longer it is, the older your drink is.

2.Smelling is probably the most important part of the appreciation procedure. To nose your drink properly you need a proper glass, a glass with a bowl and a narrow opening. You can opt either for a Glencairn or for a Copita nosing glass. Do not chose a low ball or a short tumbler because these would not be able to display the aroma properly. Bowl of the glass helps in stimulating the aroma while the narrow opening prevents the aroma from escaping.
Now just before taking a sip, smell your drink. Deeply but slowly. Once, twice and thrice. Eventually, you will discover some mouth watering high and low notes.

3.Sip it. In a small quantity. Roll it on, beside and beneath your tongue, and finally, swallow it. Feel the warmth.

Tip number 1: Stop taking Ice Cubes:
Grow up Man! If you really want to appreciate a matured and real poison, stop taking those big ice cubes. That not only closes down the aroma but also prevents you from realizing the proper taste of your drink.

Tip number 2: Add a little bit still regular water:
A bottled scotch has an alcoholic strength of 40-46% v/v approximately. Add some water to reduce the alcoholic volume to around 36%, which is ideal for our palette. Too much strong flavors could make your taste buds numb and that is why adding a little water (of room temperature) is always recommended. Moreover, water helps in revealing the aroma.

Tip number 3: Last but not the least:
Enjoy your drink, have fun do whatever you want but be a responsible citizen and drink responsibly. Say ‘NO’ to drunk driving. If you are drunk, ask the concerned personnel of your Corporate Picnic Spot near Kolkata, they will drop you home.
