The legal situation for vehicle importers

As the British Consulate in Lisbon makes clear, there are certain processes that must be followed by any Briton importing a motor vehicle into Portugal.

Provided that your vehicle is registered in an EU state – as the UK currently is – you will be able to keep it in Portugal for six months, whether consecutively or otherwise, as long as specific conditions are met. These include the vehicle being registered in the name of a person who is not resident, employed or carrying out any kind of paid activity in Portugal, as well as the vehicle being brought into the country by its registered owner or keeper.

‘Resident’, by the way, is defined for the purposes of this legislation as someone who spends at least 185 days in Portugal in any one calendar year, or whose source of income from paid employment is in Portugal, or whose headquarters or established business activity is in Portugal.
