This is a short guide to gearing up neglected alts to get them ready for the new expansion. It assumes that you have one or more new or badly geared characters at or below level 55 and want to get them to 60 and minimally geared for heading into the new storyline in October.
GEARING AT 55
Anything your character has on at 55 will do. If, for whatever reason, you have a character that arrived at 55 completely naked, then you can visit the Level 55 Modifications Vendor on Fleet and buy 172 rated mods for all your gear for 2 Basic commendations each. It will cost 42 comms to fill seven armor shells, and another 12 for your mainhand and offhand. Earpiece, implant, and relic slots can be left empty.
NOTE:?Don't forget color crystals.?All weapons and offhands you receive after level 55 will come with empty color crystal slots. Make sure you drop in a +41 crystal of your favorite type and color before using.
LEVEL 55 - 60
Start the [SOLO] Forged Alliances storyline from the mission terminal on your ship. This will lead you through four flashpoints with some cutscenes in between. At the end you will have a full set of spec appropriate 162 rated green Alliance gear that will get you started on Rishi.
NOTE:?Hang onto your 162 gear set.?This is the most bolster-friendly starter set you can get for PvP at level 60 and will be the best gear you can use until you get your real PvP set. Swap out the barrel, hilt, or armoring in the mainhand and offhand for cheap 148 rated blue pieces to get the maximum effect from the PvP bolster.
When you reach level 56, buy some cheap blue 178 rated Ruusan crafted relics from the GTN. DPS should pick up Focused Retribution + Serendipitous Assault. Healers can use the same relics as DPS. Tanks should pick up Fortunate Redoubt and Reactive Warding.
Play through the storyline on Rishi, and do everything once, including the dailies that pop up. You will get a full set of 168 rated gear, and then a full set of 178 kit by the end of Rishi. The 178 rated set will carry you all the way through Ziost, so you will not need to buy any gear at all from 55 to 60. Save your Basic commendations for Ziost and just ignore the Basic Gear Vendor that sells 186 rated purple gear.
After Rishi, head on to Yavin IV and do everything once, including one pass through the missions that are available after you finish the storyline.
LEVEL 60
After you hit 60 and finish Yavin IV, return to your ship and pick up the Presence on Ziost mission from your mission terminal. This will direct you to Ziost, where you will get a five-piece 190 rated armor set as quest rewards. The planetary story and dailies on Ziost are very quick and simple to complete, and your 178 rated gear from Rishi, which will be quickly repaced by quest rewards, will do fine for all the solo missions.
When you finish the Ziost quests, you can buy the belt and bracers you did not get as quest rewards from the Ziost Gear Vendor on the orbital station for 80 Basic comms and 12 of the legacy bound Ziost tokens. You should have at least 16 Ziost tokens from the quests, plus any extra you may have picked up from elites or champs on the planet.
You also can buy a 190 rated earpiece and implants from the Ziost gear vendor. Those will be 240 Basic comms and 45 Ziost tokens total. However, you should wait until you finish the planet to buy these pieces, because the elites and champs on the planet have a fairly good chance to drop stat appropriate ears and implants.
Also, if you do everything once from Forged Alliances through Ziost, including one pass through the [WEEKLY] missions on Yavin IV and Ziost, then you should have just over 100 Elite commendations when you are done. Those can be used to buy one 192 rated earpiece or implant from the Elite gear vendor on Fleet, so you may need to buy only two pieces from the Ziost vendor, or one or none if you got some drops on the planet.
You will get a free offhand from the last quest on Ziost, but you may want to buy a second one to get the mod and enhancement. You can use those with a 186 or 192 rated crafted barrel or hilt to make your starter level 60 mainhand. The spare offhand will be 80 Basic comms and 15 Ziost tokens.
If you did not spend any along the way, you should have around 1.2-1.5 million credits from a full Forged Alliances through Ziost run, and that will cover a good part of the cost of a 192 crafted barrel or hilt. If you don't want to pay GTN pricing for your barrel or hilt, then pick up a cheap 186 rated crafted piece and run some story mode ops to get your starter 192 mainhand.
And that's it. You're ready for KOTFE!
COMPANIONS
Run the Yavin IV [WEEKLY] Spirit of Cooperation to get a full set of 192 rated gear for your preferred companion, which includes earpiece and implants. Run the [WEEKLY] Enemy Within to get a 192 mainhand weapon. The [DAILY] She Who Greedily Devours on Rishi gives 192 rated companion offhands to complete the set.
Because all of this gear is legacy bound, you can use the same kit for any other companion that has the same main stat and role as the one you just finished gearing. So, for example, the armor set that you obtain for any DPS or healing companion that uses Cunning as their main stat will work for?all?of your Cunning-based DPS and healing companions, on any class. Also, all of this gear has only a level 55 requirement to equip, so for future alts you can use it from that point on.
To complete your companion legacy armory you will only need to collect an appropriate minimum set of mainhand weapon and offhand types for each main stat. Every piece will include in the tooltips a list of the companions that can use it, in case you have any doubts.
Gearing HK-51 and Treek first, if you have them, has some advantages. HK-51's armor set will cover all your Aim-based droid companions in DPS mode, and Treek's two sets together will cover all humanoid Aim-based companions in all roles. Between them that's a lot of companions geared up from just three sets, in addition to the two universal companions that any class can use.
NOTE ON STATS AND LEGACY GEAR
It's cheap and easy to make up some legacy bound armor sets and weapons if you're going to be doing this with a lot of alts. If you do this, one nice thing is that the Ziost tokens become very easy to farm up with successive alts, since you don't need to spend any on the pieces that aren't given as quest rewards.
However, as we now know, stats will be changing substantially when the expansion releases. Under the system we have now, you typically would make up one legacy set for each main stat using your Ziost mods, to cover all your alts. The better plan, looking ahead to the stat conversion, would be to assemble, by the time you're done, one set covering each common combination of secondary stats, regardless of the main stats used.
So, for instance, instead of wanting one set for each main stat, after the expac drops you will want one set for eachrole?--- DPS, heals, and tank. That means that when you run alts through Ziost, you may want to take the pieces for whatever role you don't have a set for yet, if you already have your main spec covered. So just make sure to pick up one set each for some DPS spec, healing spec, and tanking spec, regardless of what main stats they use, and set those aside to be your KOTFE sets.
Once the expac drops, the stats on those sets will be converted to have Mastery as the "main stat" on all, and the secondary stats will be rolled into whatever Bioware decides are the new equivalents for them. And then you'll have shiny new role-ready 190 rated legacy bound sets to start the new storyline with, using any spec you like.
