Swimming Pool Chlorine Tablets Vs Granules – Which Should You Use?

by Liz Seyi Digital marketing manager

While there is no shortage of different types of chemicals that could be instrumental in your efforts to keep your swimming pool inviting, safe and pleasurable for everyone who uses it, chlorine is an especially crucial product for ensuring your pool’s clarity and cleanliness.

Furthermore, there are two main options for the chlorine you purchase for your own pool: tablets or granules. Which of these, then, is the one we would advise you to use?

How do tablets and granules differ in their function?

Swimming pool chlorine tablets are highly concentrated, often consisting of around 90% chlorine, compared to the about 60% pure chlorine that granules tend to be made up of.

As a consequence, chlorine tablets can take a while to dispense into a pool, which is why pool owners typically use dispensers that allow for the gradual dissolution of the tablets into the pool at a controlled rate. This also helps to prevent the interior of the pool being discoloured by the high-concentrate chlorine.

Chlorine granules, meanwhile, are simply scattered over a pool. Their combination of a smaller consistency and lower concentration makes them much more suitable for this purpose than chlorine tablets, as they dissolve more easily. This, in turn, enables them to fight pool bacteria much more quickly as well.

The right choice for you will depend on your specific circumstances

As you might imagine given these differing characteristics, swimming pool chlorine tablets also differ greatly from chlorine granules in terms of how and when you might use them.

You might find, for example, that tablets are less hassle than granules for the ongoing maintenance of your pool, as long as you get the dosage right amid the natural changes in the conditions affecting your pool water. There might, for example, sometimes be higher rainfall that especially disrupts the pH of your pool water, thereby necessitating adjustment to the level of chlorine you add over time.

Chlorine granules, meanwhile, provide the quick action that helps to make them popular for shock treatments. If, for instance, it has been a few weeks since you last treated your pool and you wish to use it, chlorine granules will enable you to make your pool usable in a much shorter space of time.

But of course, it’s also important to acknowledge that many pool owners use chlorine tablets and chlorine granules perfectly well in tandem. You might use granules at the start of a cleansing process, for instance, and then switch to tablets for the longer-term maintenance of your pool water.
