Supplies for Candle Making

by Marta Jordan Writer
You’ve decided to make candles and require candle making supplies for your new craft. Quality equipment can contribute to better procedures and finished results in your manufacturing process. You may already have access to some equipment and supplies for candle making casually sitting in your kitchen cupboards and drawers, without even knowing it.

Let’s go through a checklist to ensure you have all you need.

Glass thermometer
This is a vital tool which will help you control the heating and cooling down of your chosen candle wax. Your candle wax always starts in a solid state, becomes liquid on heating, then becomes solid in candle form. If you don’t have an accurate way to track this whole process, you could end up with issues appearing in your final product. Most wax manufacturers specify a recommended pouring temperature. The thermometer will sit in your melted wax. A clip on the thermometer makes it straightforward to clip to your pot so you don’t need to hold it. It is also recommended to add fragrance at a particular temperature. You may very well have a candle thermometer or a meat thermometer in one of your drawers. You could choose to invest in an infrared thermometer for further ease if you make large batches of candles down the track.

Scale
In candle making, everything needs to be weighed, For example, your wax and fragrance both need to be weighed. It’s absurd to proceed with candle making without a scale unless you have acquired a kit with pre-measured portions and directions. You will need to weigh the fragrance so that you have the correct percentage of fragrance to wax ratio. This will ensure that your candle is safe to burn. You may also need to establish how much wax each of your glasses will hold if the glass manufacturer hasn’t stated this information.

Wick holder
All candle makers seriously want to avoid an off-centre wick. It would influence both the look and the burning competence of your candle. While you pour the melted wax into your container, you will need a wick holder system to hold your wick in place. Alternatively you might pour your wax and fragrance, then insert the wick holder while the wax is still liquid. A clothes peg, two pencils or chopsticks, clothes pegs, metal bars and ice-cream sticks with a drilled hole will all do the trick.

Aluminium melting jug
An aluminium melting jug is convenient for melting wax in. It can also be used for pouring candles. We will mention this further in the next point.

Pouring pots
You will require some kind of container in which to melt your candle wax. You could either fill a kitchen pot with water (a.k.a the double boiler method), then insert your wax filled aluminium pitcher into it. Alternatively, you could melt the wax directly in the pot. You might like to use the stove, a deep fryer or a hot plate as the heat source.

Plastic pouring pot
If you are pouring tea lights or votives, a plastic pouring pot will come in handy. With its long pouring snout, you will have better management over pouring than would with a larger aluminium pitcher.
