Sunday is thought to be the day of rest, but not in the capital city. London’s streets are filled with people hustling and bustling around shops, monuments and restaurants, soaking in the culture and cuisine. Whether you are staying in The Shaftesbury or one of London’s Piccadilly hotels, you will find yourself in the heart of the action with Sunday being the best day to spend in the city.

London is synonymous with wealth and luxury and so it has a place in the Top 3 most expensive cities in the world, however, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have a plethora of free events that happen every weekend. From exhibitions to concerts, from markets to church services, there is something for you to enjoy without having to spend a penny.

Marylebone Farmers’ Market

If you are a fan of local food and produce, the Marylebone Farmers’ Market is the perfect way to spend your Sunday. The market is home to 40 stalls that all hold a stunning array of meat, eggs, drinks, jams and other confectionaries, fresh flowers and greenery all sourced from London and the surrounding areas. It is extremely popular with the locals who head to the market for their weekly shop, but it is also a frequent haunt for tourists who are looking for authentic British food. Companies such as Akiki Organics, who pride themselves on producing fruit, vegetables, preserves and eggs that are almost at one with nature, and Dallaways Cherries, who produce over 15 different varieties of cherries and rent cherry trees on a yearly basis so you can go and pick the cherries of your very own tree, are only a few out of a whole hoard of stalls that have turned Marylebone into one of the main food hubs in London.

Church Services

There are a large selection of religious houses scattered around the city; from synagogues to mosques to churches, there is a place of worship for every religion. For Christians, Sunday is their day of worship and where better to attend a Sunday service than in Westminster Abbey or St Paul’s Cathedral, two of the most iconic religious buildings in London.

St Paul’s Cathedral is the fifth to be stood on the site and is a symbol of Britain’s architectural genius and unwavering strength. Services are held throughout the week but the Sunday service attracts regular church worshipers as well as tourists who not only wish to experience the splendour of the cathedral, but also to be part of the very reason why the cathedral was built, to bring people closer to God.

The service times are as follows:

  • 8am: Holy Communion
  • 10.15am: Mattins
  • 11.30am: Sung Eucharist
  • 3.15pm: Choral Evensong
  • 6pm: Eucharist

Westminster Abbey is one of the oldest buildings in London; parts of the abbey date back to 960 AD. It is filled with over 3,000 burials and is still used as a place of worship, celebrations and mournings. Usually, to visit the abbey, an admission charge must be made but on a Sunday, it is free to attend a service.

The service times are as follows:

  • 8.00am: Holy Communion
  • 10.00am: Choral Matins
  • 11.15am: Sung Eucharist
  • 3.00pm: Choral Evensong
  • 5.45pm: Organ Recital
  • 6.30pm: Evening Service
