Summer Seminars: Making the Most of Your Time
As a small business owner you are considered an expert in your field. It’s time to capitalize on your level of expertise, locally.
Don’t be shy: You’ve set up shop (physically or literally), provided specialized services or merchandise, and created a following. With warmer weather and more customers spending time outdoors, it’s time to take your expertise on the road.
Recently, on a weekday visit to my local library, I noticed the place was bursting with activity, but the community room was empty. Mothers with young children in the kids’ section, professionals using the computers, and lots of seniors, chatting with friends and, in general, making the most of their morning out.
What better place to hold a seminar, establishing (or reinforcing) your place in the community! A public space filled with potential customers who will welcome the opportunity to learn something new. The cost will be minimal (or free) for use of the room. Best of all, you can share your knowledge, provide advice, and create chatter about your business.
For availability, check with the head librarian. While a library usually holds a variety of events and activities throughout the week, the mid-day slots are typically open and a great time to host your special event. And keep the event free, to spread goodwill in your neighborhood.
Once you’ve securing the time and date, make the space welcoming with snacks and refreshments (if allowed in the room); be mindful of the time you’ve been allotted, and have plenty of samples and takeaways, including business cards.
Don’t forget to advertise. Provide the library with flyers of your upcoming event and see if they can put the date on their online calendar. Share your news with local papers and online sites; they appreciate events that are simple to promote, so provide them with information in an easy-to-read format. And should you choose to advertise, make sure to let everyone know admission is free – which is always popular.
While the event is a form of advertising your business, you also are providing a service, which is sure to delight the crowd and hopefully attract even more customers.
