Studying Social Work in Australia: Basic Understanding

by Arpita Shah Seo Executive

In recent times, social workers have been in high demand. Social workers work to overcome social issues facing individuals, communities and families in the society. They operate in a wide variety of settings, including child protection, interpersonal and family disputes, family intervention, healthcare social work, disability services, prisons, addictions, social policy, mental health and counselling services.

To qualify as a social worker in Australia, you need to complete a degree or Diploma in social work. The social work programmes are offered throughout Australia. In Australia, degrees are registered with and recognised by the Australian Association of Social Workers, a professional body.

Sociology, psychology, communication skills, problem-solving and facilitating progress in human relationships through counselling are the key elements to study social work at degree level in Australia. Practical placements are significant, and you should expect to undertake fieldwork in various settings to put your learning into practice. Different degrees may offer the opportunity to specialise in a specific area of social work, for instance, child and family practice, youth service or health social work practice.

It’s not possible to study an undergraduate degree in counselling (other degrees, like a Bachelor of Human Services, offer strong elements of similar services, though). At postgraduate level, many options are available. Also, social work courses are among the cheapest courses for international students in Australia.

Those who’ve already qualified as social workers and want to develop their skills in a particular area can enrol on a Master of Social Work course. To apply in these courses, you need to have a professional work experience of minimum one year.

Students who have a degree in a different area and wish to retain and qualify as social workers also have an opportunity to enrol on a professional Master programme- this will allow you to compete and qualify in two years rather than the four years required for the bachelor degree.

There are various opportunities to undertake postgraduate study in counselling in Australia. Depending more on their focus, these courses may have an emphasis on education, psychology or social work.
