Strategies for Improving DEIB in the Workplace

by Peter Bravo Online Marketing

The success of any business depends greatly on its people. A workplace that promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) helps to foster an environment where people feel recognized, listened to, and respected and is more likely to increase employee engagement and retention, and lead to greater innovation, productivity, and growth. According to Diversity Wins, a 2020 report by Mckinsey, the most diverse companies are now more likely than ever to outperform less diverse peers on profitability.

Despite the evidence in favor of greater diversity and inclusion in the workplace, knowing how to implement effective DEIB strategies may still present challenges. In this article, we will outline three ways your organization can improve DEIB within the workplace.

Set Up Employee Resource Groups (ERGs)

ERGs are part of  90% of Fortune 500 companies and are shown to positively contribute to overall employee experience, retention and recruitment efforts. These employee-led groups can help your business to build a more supportive and inclusive work environment by helping underrepresented employees who share similar backgrounds and characteristics to  feel included and that they belong.

Incorporating ERGs into your DEIB strategy can offer a safe space for these employees, providing a platform where meaningful conversations can take place, and can even lead to the creation of policies or processes that will further improve DEIB in your workplace.

Provide DEIB Training

Providing your employees with DEIB training can raise awareness within your organization on different types of diversity and help your employees to understand and appreciate the importance and value of promoting inclusion and belonging in the workplace.

Such training should be designed to address issues of discrimination and harassment in the workplace as well as uncovering unconscious biases so they can be challenged and overcome. By educating your employees on these issues you can make great strides in creating a safer and more inclusive working environment throughout your organization.

DEIB should also be incorporated into your organization’s leadership training as it will ensure those leading it are championing these concepts and values, resulting in a greater ability to relate to and communicate with their employees and clients.

Acknowledge All Celebrations

One way to introduce greater cultural awareness and recognition of diversity into your workplace is by acknowledging the variety of holidays celebrated within your organization. This signals to your employees that their cultures and traditions are respected, helping to create a feeling of belonging and inclusivity at work.

Marking important holidays and celebrations throughout the year in your company’s calendar can help your employees to become aware of these upcoming celebrations as well as factor them in when scheduling meetings or important deadlines.

Some of the important celebrations to be aware of in order to foster a more inclusive workplace for black employees include Juneteenth, Black History Month, Rosa Parks Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Kwanzaa, while Día de los Muertos and Cinco de Mayo are important days for the Hispanic community. Non-Christian holidays include Diwali for Hindus, Ramadan for Muslims and Yom Kippur for Jews. Other significant days include Chinese New Year, and Indigenous Peoples Day.

The outlined strategies in this article can help your organization to create a stronger and more inclusive workplace culture for all its employees.
