Step 1: Sign up for free American Airlines frequent flyer Program. You can work your way towards upgrades once you begin racking up miles on American Airlines flights.

Step 2: Learn how to earn miles toward an upgrade by reviewing the AAdvantage participant guide. You can also earn miles when you book a hotel room and rental cars with certain companies.

Step 3: Start earning miles. If you pay the full fare, you can get a free upgrade within the United States starting at 5000 miles. If you will purchase a discount fare, you need 15,000 miles and will have to pay an additional $75.

Step 4: You can request an upgrade awards program when booking a flight by providing your AAdvantage number. Available to all Advantage customers. In some cases, you are required to pay the fee which depends on your destination and the type of fare.

Step 5: To reach executive platinum status, earn enough miles. Once you get this title, you can have eight upgrades called systemwide upgrades, per year for yourself a passenger you designate. Upgrades must be requested at the time of booking.

Step 6: You can request a 500- mile upgrade for flights not longer than 500 miles one way. You may be allowed to upgrade from economy fare but regular AAdvantage members can only upgrade from a full fare in the economy class. Executive Platinum members can get complimentary upgrades and platinum and gold members also get complimentary upgrades on full-fare tickets.

To request an upgrade simply Logging into American airlines official site at aa.com and make sure you have systemwide upgrades available in your Advantage account. Look if the system upgrades link to find flights with upgrade seats available. You may call your elite service desk to confirm your upgrade. If an upgrade is not available at the time of booking, the airline will waitlist your request.
