Steps to Recharge a Dead Battery

A car battery could die because of several reasons, which include keeping  it in chilly temperature, leaving headlights switched on despite the car being turned off etc. But the big question comes how to recharge it. The following points describe the steps of recharging a dead battery.

Before starting the car:
  • Investigate the looks of your car battery before starting it-If the battery of your car shows signs of damage such as cracks or leakage of battery acids then one should not risk starting it as it will be injurious to health of people. So it is extremely important to check how the battery looks before it starts.
  • Wear safety gloves and goggles-Before handling  the battery  which is dead, it is important to wear hand gloves and goggles to protect hands and eyes from acids such as sulfuric the battery which is dead might emit sulfuric).
  • Make sure the wires connected in the battery are corrosion free and safe-Batteries should be cleaned if they are corroded with the help of brushes.
  • Drive the car into a place located close to the car that has dead battery without  allowing the cars to get in  touch with one another- The cars should be placed next to each other and facing similar path. Also the space amidst the car’s battery should be verified so that it is close to the cables in the jumper to join the vehicles together.
  • The car comprising of charged battery should be turned off.


Starting the battery that is dead:

  • The section on each vehicle where the batteries are kept should be opened.
  • Observe the positive and negative end  situated on each battery which are indicated by plus or minus sign simultaneously.
  • Positive cable should be attached to the terminals that are positive.Similarly the negative end of the negative cables should be attached to the negative end on both the  batteries of the car.
  • Join the negative  part of the cable to a grounded element  made up of a metal of the vehicle which consist the dead battery. It will help to ground the vehicle consisting of the battery which is dead ahead of starting.
  • Leave some minutes after beginning the engine of the car containing charged battery-Although it will take much longer time to charge the battery as it will enable the dead battery to gain charge of its own.
  • Now separate and eliminate the cables from both vehicles after the engine of the vehicle has begun in reversed series as it will prevent an occurrence of an explosion.
  • Permit the vehicle that consist the dead battery to continue operating for a few minutes.It will permit the charging devices such as an alternator in the car to allow the battery to recharge.
