In India, energy is a big issue as there are many remote areas in the country that are still in their dark days. Though government is making every possible move to make electricity available to the farthest parts of the nation, there are various regions that are still waiting for the same. From solar power stations to new thermal power generation projects, government has taken several new measures to scale-up the production of electricity. And when it comes to power generation, steam turbines form the basis of the same. Today, steam turbines produce more electricity energy than any other medium.

In a power generation capacity, the steam turbine is connected to a generator which generates electrical power. The turbine acts as the mechanical side of the system by enabling the rotary motion for the generator, while the generator acts as the electrical side by using the laws of thermo-dynamism to produce electrical energy. Let’s understand how steam turbines work and their types.

The two popular turbine types are back pressure steam turbine and condensing steam turbine. The first one is a type of steam turbine which is used in a setting of low or medium pressure steam. The high pressure steam enters the back pressure steam turbine and as the steam expands the thermal energy is converted into mechanical energy. This mechanical energy is employed to rotate an electric generator or mechanical equipment, such as pumps, fans, compressors etc.

The outlet steam exits from the back pressure steam turbine at overpressure and returns to the plant for process steam application such as heating or drying purposes.

On the other hand, in case of condensing steam turbine, the steam expands below the atmospheric pressure and then "condenses" while heating the cooling water in a condenser. These steam turbines are largely used in industrial power plants as condensing tails connected to back-pressure turbines. If there is low demand for process steam, the excess steam is run through the condensing tail to produce more power. In terms of overall dimension and steam values, there is no major difference between a condensing turbine and back pressure turbine.

Whether it is a large scale or small scale power requirements, one can consult a back pressure steam turbine manufacturer or a condensing steam turbine manufacturer and discuss the same. There are various leading steam turbine manufacturers in India who provide full-fledge support to public and private enterprises to help them become power self-sufficient. These players offer both types of steam turbines that work across a wide range of pressure and flow applications.
