Speed humps, these are everywhere, and millions of people drive over them every day. No matter where you are going you will invariably find them. Why do speed bump manufacturers and suppliers make them and why are they so necessary?

Speed Humps Are Bad For Speed, But Good for Life

No one likes driving over them but statistical data points out to the immense effectiveness in protecting lives. Vehicular speed is a dual edged sword. It is necessary for people to reach from point A to B in the least possible time, but uncontrolled speed often leads to death. However, speed bumps are not unanimously popular.

Besides people who are simply addicted to speed, speed bumps have been criticized by some as obstacles in the path of emergency services and slow them down from reaching their destination in time. But that is something emergency services have learned to work around. The effects of removing all speed humps and bumps would be worse. Imagine all the accidents that will happen on the slow everyone down from reaching their destinations on time, including emergency services, and that’s not even taking into account the loss of lives that will happen because of speeding vehicles. The logical summary of this argument leads to one conclusion – speed bumps are absolutely necessary, and speed bump manufactures and suppliers have a crucial role to play in the safety of drivers and pedestrians.

Here is a closer look at different effects of speed bumps on road safety.

Reduced crash frequency rate

In a survey, it was found that streets with bump installations were effective in reducing crashes by over 39% in streets that were prone to high speed traffics. The length of bumps contributed to a variation in numbers. Longer bumps (22 feet) were found to be more effective than shorter ones (14 feet) and that mattered a lot.

Difference in crash types

As a result of speed bump installations a difference in the type of crashes were also observed. It was found that the crashes were less severe compared to crashes where vehicles were at higher speeds for the lack of interruptions. Head on collisions were substantially reduced and the numbers reported were primarily crashes into parked vehicles.

Difference in severity of injury

Not only was there a marked difference in the number of incidences, the severity was also lower. This was a significant benefit and perhaps the most important too. Speed bumps are necessary and very meaningful for the safety of not just those behind the wheels but also for people on the street. s
