Some Interesting Facts About Flowers

by Jessica W. Writer
Ever since the dawn of time, flowers have played an important role in our lives and intrigued us with their enticing scents and unique beauty. However, there are some among these nature's gifts that posses incredible characteristics which might be unknown to many.

Given below are some unbelievable facts about flowers that most of us may have never heard before:

  • Tulips are one of the most popular flowers in Morwell. But during the 17th century, they became more precious in Holland than they have been or would be anywhere else ever. In the 1630s, some kind of tulip frenzy seized the people of Western Europe and they started using the flower as a form of currency. However, the practice did not stick around for long, because tulips can last only for 7 days at the most.

  • The Gas Plant (also known as Burning Bush) is called so because its flowers as well as seed pods and leathery leaves give off strong lime scented vapours which can catch fire if lighted using matchsticks on calm summer nights.

  • In ancient Egypt, lotus was considered a sacred ornamental flower and even used for burial rituals. The flower generally blooms in damp wetlands and rivers, but stays dormant during droughts. Egyptians thought of lotus as a sign of eternal life and resurrection. Nowadays, the floral beauty is considered a symbol of grace, beauty, serenity and purity.

  • Many people believe hat the head of a sunflower tracks the movement of the sun from dawn to dusk, a phenomenon that is called heliotropism. The reason for this strange behaviour of sunflowers might be accounted for by the fact that their heads are made up of several tiny flowers or florets. Their seeds are a popular source of a kind of cooking oil named after the flowers themselves.

  • Rose, the universal symbol of love, is related to several kinds of fruits, including apples, cherries, raspberries, peaches, plums, pears, almonds and nectarines. Some varieties of this flower are amongst the richest sources of Vitamin C. Ancient Egyptians made use of roses for preparing beautiful wreaths on the tombstones of their deceased loved ones.

  • Moon flowers only bloom at night, and remain closed during daytime. They have large fragrant blooms which are either pink or white and 4 to 6 inches in height.

There are so many things in the kingdom of flowers which can seem strange to us. Who knows, there might be still many interesting facts yet to be discovered by us, facts that the flowers are hiding carefully under the impossible depth of their beauty.
