Nourish Your Skin

The skin is actually the largest organ in the human body. It is made up of several layers of cells and requires nourishment and protection the same as other organs in our body. The health of our skin is dependent largely upon staying hydrated -- full of water. Since one of the main functions of the skin is to work as a natural air conditioner, our skin naturally looses water constantly. We tend to recognize this as our sweating mechanism, but there is a lot of water loss that we don't notice. The sun and other environmental factors combined with that water loss contributes to the aging process as our dehydrated cells are more easily broken down.

The beautiful glow of healthy, radiant skin does not come by just great skin care although that is extremely important.  Contributing to the healthy glow of our skin is an overall healthy, fit body, including a healthy mind and emotional state.

One of our skin's roles is that of a garbage disposal – riding the body of impurities and toxins.  Our skin is part of our natural filtering system.  Chemical imbalances in the body, poor diet and toxin buildup will be apparent by looking at the skin.  There will be an overall discoloration, increased blemishes and acne, dark circles under the eyes, loss of skin elasticity.  Stress and worry, depression, emotional difficulties all show up in the look of our skin.

Eat and drink to nourish your skin. Consume a diet rich in antioxidant foods, fresh fruits and vegetables, fish and low fat meats. A good diet will be low in caffeine, sugar, and alcohol as well as artificial sweeteners. Avoid processed sugars. A good diet that is and high in vegetables and whole grains will have a positive impact on our skin.  Drink lots of water so your body will transport the toxins out through the kidneys instead of having them have to be secreted through the skin.

Exercise regularly, and include both weight resistance and aerobics. Exercise stimulates your circulation which increases the blood flow to your skin. The blood that flows through our skin layers serves to substitute nutrients and oxygen for toxins. Yoga or some sort of meditative activity will help to rid the body of stress and worry which result in premature aging of skin.

Don't Abuse Your Skin
Do not subject your skin to pollutants. Avoid smoking and excessive drinking of alcohol, both of which cause your skin to age prematurely. Stay away from tanning beds, and make sure to protect your skin in extreme weather.

Protect Your Skin -- Implement a Personal Skin Care System
Gently cleanse and moisturize your skin according to your skin type and the season of the year. Always protect your skin from sun damage. Sun exposure is necessary to take in Vitamin D, but very small amounts of exposure will provide you with the daily requirement of Vitamin D.

Establish a routine skin care program.

Wash your face daily.  Depending on the face wash you use and the heaviness of your makeup it may be necessary to use a cleansing product to remove makeup first.  Your skin type should dictate which type of cleansing agent you use on your face.

(Also if you are troubled by acne a cleanser for acne prone skin may be helpful. One of the best is Anthony Logistics Anti-Acne Bar -- A unique Cleansing Complex containing White Tea, Coconut Oil, Aloe Vera, Exfoliating Beads and Vitamins E and A. Clears away impurities, exfoliates and smoothes troubled skin all in one step.)
Extra dry skin may need an oil based cleanser whereas super sensitive skin types may warrant a more natural chemical free pure cleansing agent.

After washing your face a toner is helpful for closing up the pores, improving the blood circulation and adding that healthy glow.  Again the type of skin you have will dictate the toner you use. For years two ingredients have been used in toners – witch hazel and rosewater.  You can mix these two if needed for your skin, just remember that the dryer skin types would need more rosewater and the oilier skin types use more witch hazel.  Most skin types require some combination of both.  You must use some trial and error here (or try our recommended product, Celazome Rosewater Clarifier ). Also remember in the winter to not use toner quite as much because it tends towards drying the skin.

Lastly don’t forget to moisturize your skin.  Do this immediately after bathing or washing your face. It is important to moisturize the whole body’s skin, but especially the face and hands since they are usually more exposed.  When moisturizing lotions are applied just after bathing the moisture is trapped on your skin which aids the process.  Moisturizers have different heaviness based on their ingredients and if you tend to wear a lighter lotion during the day it will be beneficial to use a lotion containing a humectants at night.  These are heavier and tend to pull in moisture and trap it on your skin.  Look for the ingredients glycerin and alpha-hydroxl acid in your moisturizer.
