Six Things to Consider when Buying a Wool Quilt

by Halcyon Dreams Australian Wool Quilts Online

Wool has many excellent qualities, particularly when used in bedding. When you’re in bed, it absorbs moisture from your body and removes it from the bedding, so you remain dry and sleep better and deeper. It also regulates your temperature, so you remain cool when the weather’s hot and stay warm in the cooler winter months.

The result is an improved night’s sleep and you wake feeling refreshed. That will only happen, however, if you choose your wool quilt carefully, so here are some things to look for.

1. Filling

What you’re really after is comfort because you want to get a restful night’s sleep. That can depend on the local climate since different parts of Australia can vary from hot and humid or arid to cool nights in winter. Two people sharing the same bed may complicate matters further since they have different needs.

Wool can meet all these challenges because it has great insulation and thermal properties, trapping air and allowing your skin to breathe. It can also create a micro-climate and result in a bed that’s well ventilated.

2. Cover and Lining

You won’t get the full benefits of wool if the quilt has a synthetic cover or lining. This will create a barrier that prevents the wool breathing naturally so that heat and moisture can’t escape. Insist on natural cotton or similar to maximise performance.

3. Durability and Maintenance

Wool quilts are very easy to clean and maintain and are extremely durable and long-lasting. Any good quality quilt will have a guarantee of up to five years so check what’s on offer. Also, look for a high thread count and good stitching in the cover for long life.

4. Sustainability

If you’re concerned about the environment, wool is the most natural of products. It comes from a renewable source, unlike synthetic fillings that require much more processing involving the use of chemicals and other harmful materials.

5. Thorough Preparation

In its original form, wool will have a natural smell and will contain small amounts of debris such as leaves and grass. These may be removed in the washing process although some manufacturers are more thorough than others. Check the wool has been properly cleaned and has a natural scent.

6. Allergen-free

If you suffer from asthma or have any allergies, you need to be particularly careful. Wool is naturally hypoallergenic and prevents the development of dust mites, mould and other allergens. Some quilts will also be treated to protect against bacteria, ensuring they’re hygienic and free of odour.

All our quilts are carefully made from natural materials, including 100% Australian wool filling. Select from our extensive range and you’re assured of excellent and restful sleep for many years to come.
