Six important tips for best shrimp farming

by Anika Dixit Blogger
Shrimp farming got into another level in the last few years. The ponds are stocked with fry from the tidal or wild water entering the pond, which then is looked after for a better result. Shrimp farming is not easy and it requires hundreds of activities to maintain a consistent and seasonal supply of shrimps. The most important role in shrimp farming is played by shrimp feed, which contributes a lot of financial stability for the farmers. We would like to discuss the six important tips for best shrimp farming.

1. Improve the biosecurity

The importance of biosecurity is always overlooked in shrimp farming. It is often considered a complex procedure, which does not really have any clear benefits. It is one of the best ways to contain and avoid the spread of a disease outbreak in the farm. This practice is beneficial for not just the farm but the neighboring farms as well.

2. Sterilizing everything

This second tip is an important step that will help you to provide a disease-free environment for shrimp farming. This procedure is mostly carried out before the stocking is done. The concept of sterilizing the pond includes all the culture water to make sure the risk of any diseases is minimized.

3. Calibrate all measurement tools

It is important that all your measurement tools are calibrated, which includes the dissolved oxygen (DO) meter, refract meter, ph meter, and chemical test kit.

4. Assess post-larvae (PL) and shrimp health

This is another tip that needs to be followed if one needs a good shrimp harvest. A regular check up is required to ensure good health.  The inspection is either done by expert’s onsight or by a microscope; their health reading is recorded weekly. The following checklist should be noted:
  • Swimming actively
  • Their guts are full
  • Their morphology is normal

5. Use the baby bucket method for sampling

There will be a problem when the farmers do not take samples one week after stocking the fish. Knowing the survival rates are very important with 24 hours post-stocking. This will definitely provide the farmers with the right shrimp population.

6. Take shrimp samples regularly

Taking the shrimp samples regularly will help in accessing growth and adjust any feed regime. One must avoid overfeeding the shrimp and take shrimp samples every 5-7 days. Sampling will help in estimating the total body weight.

These tips will help build the most efficient shrimp farming strategies. Shrimp feed plays an important role in delivering the best results for any farmer.
