Six common trade show mistakes to avoid

by TOAST Event TOAST is a special event and entertainment product

Trade shows provide an excellent opportunity to showcase your products and services to a concentrated audience of potential customers with money to spend. But you are not the only one on the exhibition floor, are you? You are going head to head with your closest competitors in the market. So, how do you make sure you stand out from everyone?

Here are some of the most common trade show mistakes you should avoid to super-size your trade show success.

Picking the wrong show.

Even the best trade show booth design and marketing practices will not help your trade show be a success if you are showcasing your products and services in front of the wrong audience. Finding trade shows populated with your target audience is the first step to success.

Having no objective.

Yet another one of the biggest mistakes you can make is going to a trade show without an objective. If you have no clear goals, you will accomplish just what you aimed for: nothing.

Having unrealistic objectives.

Having unrealistic objectives does not help either. Many exhibitors dream of selling boatloads of products and services to enthusiastic customers. But people do not attend trade shows to buy – they attend them to browse. The buying happens after the show.

Not budgeting enough.

Trade shows are notoriously expensive, what with their unforeseen costs and surprisingly high late fees when deadlines are missed. This is why working with a slim budget can be a big mistake.

Unnecessary giveaways.

If you plan on creating buzz at the show by giving away lots of goodies at your booth, you have got the wrong attitude. Don’t get us wrong. People love free stuff. But what’s the point? Giveaways can be expensive, and they aren’t even that effective. Think about it: the people you attract to your booth are just leads - they are not qualified, and you have no way of knowing if they are actually interested in your product or service.

Dropping the follow-up ball post-event.

Many exhibitors wrongfully assume that once the show is over, their chances for success are over with it. However, often, the post-function analysis and subsequent follow-up execution can prove to be the most critical component to the overall success of your show. If you skip follow-ups or wait too long, you are missing the best opportunity you have with those leads.

The key to a rewarding trade show is planning ahead of time to ensure you are set-up for success. This can be overwhelming, especially when this is your first time exhibiting. That’s where hiring a professional event production company can make all the difference.
